Liverpool Negotiates Loan for Harvey Elliott to Valencia
Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the clock ticks towards Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.
The 23-year-old, who has drawn interest from several clubs across the summer, now has the La Liga side at the front of the queue ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1. Discussions have accelerated, with Valencia pushing to bring him to Mestalla for the season.
Elliott is understood to have spoken directly with Valencia boss Carlos Corberan about how he would be used in Spain, with the prospect of regular football a major part of the pitch. Any temporary switch is also expected to feed into Liverpool’s longer-term planning, with a loan likely to be tied to a contract extension that protects the value of a player whose current deal runs to the summer of 2028.
Right now, his prospects at Anfield look limited. Elliott has yet to make a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola, a stark contrast to the excitement that surrounded him when he first broke through and underlining why a move is on the table.
Last season brought frustration rather than momentum. Sent out to Aston Villa, he barely featured. An appearance off the bench in Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago left him unable to move again in January due to registration rules, and Villa then carefully managed his game time.
The Midlands club were determined he would not hit the 10-game mark that would have triggered a £35m obligation to buy. Villa went on to win the Europa League, but Elliott watched most of that journey from the fringes, stuck between a parent club unsure of his role and a loan club wary of committing to a permanent deal.
Back at Liverpool for the pre-season tour of the United States, Elliott cut an honest figure. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, he admitted he was wrestling with his next step.
“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."
That “intel” is now arriving. Liverpool had been braced for Valencia’s approach before the weekend, and the Spanish club have moved from admiration to active negotiations over a loan.
Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already racked up 149 appearances in red. The next one might have to wait.
If Valencia get their way, the next chapter of his career will be written under the lights at Mestalla, with Liverpool watching closely to see whether this is a reset – or the beginning of the end of his Anfield story.
