Liverpool signs Bradley Barcola for £100 million to replace Salah
Liverpool have moved to fill the void left by Mo Salah with a statement deal, reaching an outline agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for winger Bradley Barcola.
The 23-year-old, long identified as Liverpool’s priority attacking target this summer, is set to join for a guaranteed £100 million, with a further £20m in performance-related add-ons, according to The Times. Negotiations between the clubs reportedly made a “breakthrough” overnight, leaving only the final details to be ironed out.
Liverpool’s Salah succession plan
Salah’s departure to Trabzonspor on a free transfer earlier this month left a gaping hole in Liverpool’s attack – in goals, assists and sheer star power. The club have been scouring the market for a frontline replacement and kept coming back to the same name.
Barcola has been at the top of their list.
Liverpool view the PSG winger as the player to help replace Salah’s output from the right and refresh an attack that has already been significantly reshaped over the past two seasons. The size of the fee underlines how convinced they are.
PSG relent on asking price
PSG initially set a huge price, demanding £145m to even consider a sale. Barcola’s situation in Paris, though, gave Liverpool an opening.
The Frenchman has been battling for minutes, sitting behind Desire Doue and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia in Luis Enrique’s pecking order. On top of that, the arrivals of Ferran Torres, Maghnes Akliouche and Mika Godts in recent months have crowded the attacking positions even further.
Barcola has been pushing for a move in search of regular gametime, and PSG have now softened their stance, accepting a lower guaranteed fee with add-ons to bridge part of the gap.
He still has two years left on his contract in the French capital, which helped PSG drive a high price, but Liverpool’s persistence – and the player’s desire to leave – has shifted the balance.
A place in Liverpool’s transfer history
If completed on the terms reported, the deal will make Barcola the second-most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history.
Only Alexander Isak, who joined from Newcastle United for £125m last year, will have cost more. Barcola’s guaranteed £100m fee matches the initial outlay for Florian Wirtz, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £100m, though Wirtz’s package includes a further £16m in add-ons tied to Liverpool winning the Premier League or UEFA Champions League.
For Barcola, the structure is slightly different: £100m locked in, £20m more if certain conditions are met. Either way, it is elite-company money and a clear signal of how central Liverpool expect him to be.
The move now hangs on final agreements and formalities. Once those are settled, the question becomes simple: can Bradley Barcola carry the weight of replacing Mo Salah at Anfield?
