Liverpool's New Vice-Chairman Amit Bhatia Attends First Home Game

A new power figure will be watching from the Anfield directors’ box on Saturday.

Amit Bhatia, Liverpool’s incoming vice-chairman, is set to attend the club’s first home game of the Premier League season as Andoni Iraola’s side face Nottingham Forest. It will be the first public glimpse of the man fronting the most significant shift in the club’s ownership structure since Fenway Sports Group arrived.

Bhatia, who last month stepped down as co-owner and director of QPR after an 18-year stint at Loftus Road, now leads 1892 Holdings – the consortium that has acquired around 38 per cent of Liverpool from FSG in a deal worth just over £2bn.

This is not a quiet, background investment.

The 46-year-old British-Indian businessman, based in London, is expected to be a regular and prominent presence at Anfield, far more visible than other figures within 1892 Holdings or FSG. While the heavyweight names behind the money sit thousands of miles away, Bhatia will be the face on the ground.

And those heavyweight names are striking.

The consortium includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, both billionaires operating on a global stage. Bezos is based in the United States, Saverin in Singapore, underlining the international reach now woven into Liverpool’s ownership profile.

The reshaped hierarchy will extend into the boardroom.

Bhatia will take a seat on an expanded Liverpool board that will also feature Elaine Saverin, wife of Eduardo Saverin, and Bryan Baum. Baum is representing Bezos through K5 Sports, the venture capital firm he founded, giving the Amazon chief a formal voice in the club’s governance even from afar.

For all the headlines, the deal is not yet over the line.

The transaction remains subject to approval from the new Independent Football Regulator, a fresh layer of scrutiny in the English game, and all involved must pass the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test before the structure becomes fully official.

When FSG confirmed the sale of a minority stake to 1892 Holdings, Bhatia set out his stance in carefully chosen words.

“We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG,” he said. “We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield. To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege.

“We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come.”

On Saturday, those words meet reality. A new vice-chairman, a new era of money and influence, and a familiar old stadium watching closely to see what comes next.
