Liverpool’s Midfield Dilemma: Will Lamine Camara Join?
Liverpool’s summer rebuild is already heavy on headlines, but it isn’t finished yet. Not in midfield.
Behind the noise of a blockbuster move for Bradley Barcola, the club are still working the market for a central option – and one name keeps circling back: Lamine Camara of Monaco.
Barcola deal looms, but midfield question won’t go away
Liverpool are closing in on a £120m package for Barcola from PSG, a statement signing designed to supercharge Andoni Iraola’s forward line. It’s a huge outlay, and it underlines where the club’s priority has appeared to lie: more goals, more chaos, more incision in the final third.
But the 2-2 draw with Newcastle at the weekend told a different story.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, pillars of the 2024/25 title-winning midfield, drove Liverpool forward again. They pressed, they carried, they created. They also left space. Too much of it. Newcastle repeatedly punched holes through the middle of the pitch, exposing the lack of a natural defensive shield.
That’s why the debate refuses to die. Liverpool’s attack might be getting a lavish upgrade, but the spine still looks like it needs one more piece.
Camara on the radar
A reputable source on X has linked Liverpool with strong admiration for Lamine Camara, and on paper, the fit makes sense.
At 22, the Monaco midfielder already looks like a modern holding player built for a high-intensity side. He breaks play up, reads danger early and relishes the ugly work in front of the back four. Crucially, he’s not just a destroyer.
Camara’s Ligue 1 numbers from the 2025/26 season show a player comfortable with the ball as well as against it – progressive passing, composure under pressure, and the ability to knit transitions together rather than simply recycling possession sideways.
If Liverpool want a midfielder with natural defensive instincts who can still live with the technical demands of Iraola’s system, they could do far worse.
The numbers game
That profile comes at a price.
Monaco have already turned down a £35m offer from Crystal Palace, according to the BBC. Other reports suggest the Ligue 1 club value Camara between £42.8m and £51.4m – a serious fee, but one that reflects his age, ceiling and importance to their project.
For Liverpool, the calculation is more complicated than just the fee. Recent reporting indicates the club only plan to make a maximum of two more signings this summer. With Barcola set to take up one of those slots and a clear desire to hand Iraola a full complement of forwards, any move for a midfielder would have to be weighed against leaving the attack one body light.
Do they stretch the budget and the squad plan to bring in a specialist for the base of midfield? Or do they trust Szoboszlai, Gravenberch and the existing options to carry the load in a long, punishing season?
A pivotal call for Iraola’s Liverpool
Camara, at this stage, remains an option rather than an active deal. An option that ticks a lot of tactical boxes and comes with a price tag that reflects it.
Liverpool’s recruitment team have already shown they’re willing to go big for the right forward. The real test of this window might be whether they’re prepared to do the same for the balance of the team – and whether they decide that the next title challenge depends more on one extra winger, or on the man anchoring everything behind him.
