Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract with Tottenham

Tottenham have moved quickly to lock down one of their most coveted young talents, with Lucas Bergvall signing a new contract and ending a summer of speculation over his future.

The 20-year-old midfielder, already a mainstay in the Spurs squad, has committed fresh terms after a window in which Nottingham Forest and Newcastle both circled with serious interest. The answer, in the end, was clear: he’s staying in north London.

Bergvall has already racked up 80 appearances for the club in all competitions, a remarkable number for a player of his age, and arrives back from a World Cup summer with 14 senior caps for Sweden under his belt. His trajectory has been steep, and Tottenham have no intention of letting it level off elsewhere.

“I think we’re building something great here,” Bergvall said after signing. “It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

The message is clear: he wants responsibility, and he wants it at Spurs.

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi, who has quickly made Bergvall central to his plans, underlined just how highly he rates the Swede’s mentality as well as his talent.

“Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” De Zerbi said. “Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments.

“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

Tottenham have talked a lot in recent years about building for the future. With Bergvall tied down and still nowhere near his ceiling, this is one of the clearest signs yet that the future is already on the pitch.
