Liverpool Eye Bayern's Lennart Karl Amid Wirtz Struggles

When Jürgen Klopp walked through the doors at Anfield all those years ago, many expected a German invasion. The logic was simple: German coach, German market, German core.

It never quite worked out that way.

Klopp pushed for Timo Werner, Julian Brandt and Mario Götze at various points of his Liverpool tenure. The club went in different directions. Werner’s spot went to Diogo Jota. Brandt’s became Mo Salah’s. History suggests Liverpool chose well.

Even so, the Bundesliga remained a rich hunting ground. Dominik Szoboszlai, Ibrahima Konaté, Ryan Gravenberch, Joël Matip, Naby Keïta – all arrived from Germany at different stages.

But the biggest name to cross from the Bundesliga to Anfield came after Klopp’s reign. And right now, that move is raising more questions than answers.

Wirtz yet to ignite at Anfield

Beating Manchester City and Bayern Munich to Florian Wirtz felt like a statement. Liverpool had landed one of Europe’s most coveted creators, the heartbeat of Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen. Excitement was inevitable.

The reality on the pitch has been anything but.

Wirtz has opened the season in flat, forgettable fashion. He drifts through games, too often on the fringes of the action. Liverpool are struggling to find him between the lines; when they do, he rarely bends the match to his will.

For a player signed to be a difference-maker, he has been underwhelming. The club expected far more.

There is, though, a clear route back. At Leverkusen, Alonso built a structure that revolved around Wirtz – the spacing, the rotations, the tempo all designed to free him in dangerous pockets. If Liverpool commit to a similar idea, shaping the system around his strengths rather than merely fitting him into an existing plan, the German playmaker can still become the player they thought they were buying.

While they wrestle with that tactical riddle, Liverpool’s gaze has already fixed on another German prodigy.

Liverpool make move for Lennart Karl

According to Ekrem Konur, Liverpool have made informal contact over a deal for Bayern Munich wonderkid Lennart Karl. The teenager has already broken multiple records at Bayern and carries a reputation that borders on daunting.

Karl has been labelled the greatest German talent of his generation. He operates primarily as a No.10 but can slide wide, with the technical sharpness and vision to dictate attacks from several zones.

His rise has not gone unnoticed in his homeland. In his second press conference as Germany head coach, Jürgen Klopp himself singled Karl out for praise.

"When I met Lennart for the first time and shook his hand, I immediately realised: this boy is ready. He's a real powerhouse and very confident, with very pleasant manners. He's also a bit 'cheeky/sassy', which I like. He had some outstanding moments before his injury. It was a really unfortunate time for him to get injured," Klopp said.

Those are heavyweight words from a coach who has worked with some of the finest young talents in Europe.

Karl is only 18. Yet he already has 19 goal contributions in 45 appearances for Bayern Munich’s first team – serious numbers for a teenager at a club where competition for attacking spots is relentless.

For Liverpool, actually pulling off this transfer would be extraordinary. For the second time in quick succession, they would be prising away an elite German creator from one of Europe’s superclubs.

The question now is simple: can they fix Wirtz and land Karl, or will one generational bet have to make way for the next?
