Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract at Tottenham

Lucas Bergvall has performed a sharp U-turn at Tottenham, signing a new contract just three months after telling the club he wanted out.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder had pushed for a summer move, frustrated by his lack of minutes following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival late last season. His situation alerted a queue of Premier League clubs. Nottingham Forest saw a £38m bid knocked back by Spurs, while Aston Villa and Chelsea also circled.

Game time has remained scarce. Bergvall has managed only 45 minutes of Premier League action so far this campaign, a thin return for a player De Zerbi publicly labelled a “top, top, top player” in July.

Back then, the Italian was blunt: he would not try to “convince anyone to stay” against their will. He also held his hands up, admitting he had made mistakes in how he handled Bergvall during a chaotic run-in in which Spurs only just escaped relegation.

Something has clearly shifted.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall said after signing the new deal. The midfielder spoke with the conviction of someone who has chosen his battleground.

He set out his own demands, too. “I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

For De Zerbi, who arrived in the middle of a storm and nearly saw Spurs dragged under, Bergvall’s renewal feels like a statement about the club’s direction as much as one player’s future.

Speaking on the new deal, he said: “I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

The contract is signed. The faith is clear. Now Bergvall has to turn 45 minutes into a full role in De Zerbi’s rebuild.
