Manchester City Reach Deal with Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez
Manchester City have reached an initial agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernandez, with the World Cup-winning midfielder now racing the clock to seal a dramatic deadline-day move.
Club officials from City finally sat down for direct talks with their Premier League rivals on Monday, according to British newspaper The Sun, as they pushed to land the 25-year-old before tonight’s 11pm local time cut-off.
If the deal goes through, Fernandez will be reunited with Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea boss who stepped into the Etihad dugout this summer to succeed Pep Guardiola. A reunion that once felt unlikely is suddenly within touching distance.
The pressure is now all on timing. The Argentine still needs the formal green light to undergo a medical and complete the switch, with only hours left in the window. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has already reported that City and Chelsea have an initial agreement in place, clearing the first major hurdle in the move.
Chelsea, for their part, have chosen silence. Neither the club nor manager Xabi Alonso offered clarity over Fernandez’s future after he was left out of the squad for Sunday’s match against Brighton, a decision that only fuelled speculation around Stamford Bridge.
Asked directly if Fernandez had played his last game for the London side, Alonso kept his cards close to his chest.
"We'll see. We want what's best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop," he said.
He refused to shut the door on any outcome but insisted Chelsea would not be left short.
"We're not sure, we're preparing for all scenarios, but I'm certain that whatever happens from Wednesday, we'll have a good enough squad to compete in all the Premier League matches," Alonso added.
The potential move to City comes against the backdrop of Fernandez’s complicated relationship with Chelsea’s hierarchy, particularly after the club sacked Maresca back in January. The midfielder did not hide his frustration at the time.
"I don't understand it," he told Mexican network TUDN. "Sometimes there are things we don't understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters."
That dismissal clearly stung the dressing room.
"Clearly it was a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly," Fernandez said.
For him, Maresca had given Chelsea something precious and rare in a turbulent era.
"We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing," he continued.
Now, that identity could be waiting for him in Manchester instead. The agreement is there. The manager he trusted is there. All that stands between Enzo Fernandez and a new chapter at the Etihad is a medical, a signature – and the unforgiving tick of the transfer deadline clock.
