Manchester City Signs Ayyoub Bouaddi for €100 Million

Manchester City have won the race for one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe, striking a deal with Lille for 18-year-old Moroccan Ayyoub Bouaddi after his breakout World Cup campaign.

The agreement, reached late in the window, will cost City a total of €100 million ($116.9 million). An initial €95 million ($111 million) is guaranteed, with a further €5 million ($5.9 million) in add-ons. It is a fee that underlines both the scale of the rebuild in City’s midfield and the level of belief inside the club that Bouaddi can grow into its heartbeat.

Liverpool had pushed hard earlier in the summer. The teenager’s composure and authority on the ball for Morocco at this year’s World Cup drew admiring glances from across Europe, with the Reds among the clubs tracking him closely. City, though, moved decisively once Rodri’s departure forced them into a more aggressive stance in the market.

Lille did not fold easily. The French club wanted to keep Bouaddi for at least one more season and held out for a premium price, aware they were negotiating from a position of strength with a player who had just announced himself on the global stage. Eventually, the numbers reached a level they simply could not refuse.

The hype around Bouaddi is not coming only from scouts and recruitment departments. During the tournament, Arsenal great Patrick Vieira, speaking on The Rest Is Football, offered a glowing assessment.

“Really impressive — he’s only 18, but he plays like a 30-year-old,” Vieira said when asked about the midfielder. “He’s got the tactical awareness, I think he’s always well-positioned. He’s got the technical ability to play out from the back and a really strong personality. I quite like the midfield three from Morocco, but of course, he’s the talent in this team.”

City clearly agree. After landing Elliot Anderson for a club-record £116 million ($158.2 million), Bouaddi becomes the next pillar in a rapidly reshaped engine room following the exits of Rodri and Bernardo Silva. The plan is not just to plug gaps for this season, but to build a new core that can carry the side into a post-Pep Guardiola era.

Bouaddi will sign a five-year contract with an option for a further year, a long-term commitment that signals City’s intention to make him central to their evolution under Enzo Maresca. The Italian steps into one of the most demanding jobs in football, and the club hierarchy is determined to arm him with a midfield that can dominate games in the way Guardiola’s sides so often did.

The business will not stop with Bouaddi. City still want at least one more midfielder before the window closes. Tijjani Reijnders’ departure in the past week has only sharpened that need and pushed the recruitment team into overdrive as the deadline looms.

Enzo Fernandez remains a leading target. City admire the Chelsea midfielder, but any deal would be complicated and extremely expensive, with the London club expected to resist offers below $130 million. Roma’s Manu Kone is also on the list, giving City alternative routes as they work through scenarios on the final day.

For now, though, the headline belongs to Bouaddi. An 18-year-old who plays, in Vieira’s words, like a 30-year-old. A World Cup breakout star now handed the keys to one of the most demanding midfields in Europe.

The price tag is huge. The expectations are even bigger. How quickly he grows into that responsibility may shape not just City’s season, but the early chapters of the Maresca era.
