Manchester United Monitoring Alejandro Balde's Situation at Barcelona
Manchester United are closely tracking Alejandro Balde’s situation at Barcelona after the Catalan club authorised his agent, Jorge Mendes, to search for a new destination.
The 22-year-old left-back was left out of the squad for Sunday’s game against Elche at the Martinez Valero, a decision in Spain widely interpreted as another step towards the exit door. Inside the club, the feeling is that negotiations over his departure are already under way.
Balde’s stance shifts under Cancelo pressure
Balde spent the summer insisting he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. That stance has shifted. The presence of Joao Cancelo, and the battle for minutes on the left, has weighed heavily on his thinking.
His name has been circulating in England, Portugal and Italy, but, according to Catalan outlet Sport, it is Manchester United that most excites the Spain international. United, for their part, are in the market for a left-back.
Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract. Diogo Dalot has been pushed further forward, and both he and Noussair Mazraoui are naturally right-backs. The need for a specialist on the left is obvious.
The Manchester Evening News reports, though, that Balde is only one of several options under consideration at Old Trafford.
United weigh cost against quality
United have already made contact with Mendes and believe Balde fits their profile. But the numbers matter.
Barcelona valued Balde only a few months ago at around €40–45 million. That figure sits in stark contrast to another name on United’s list: Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander left-back, who has a release clause of roughly £16 million.
That financial gulf explains why United are watching Balde closely without yet placing an official bid. For now, the only concrete offer on the table for the defender has come from Benfica, and Sport reports that proposal falls well below Barcelona’s asking price.
Aston Villa are viewed as one of the clubs most capable of matching Barcelona’s demands, but they would need to sell first to create room for such an investment.
Barcelona walk a financial tightrope
Barcelona’s position is delicate. They need to free up salary and create financial margin, yet they are reluctant to lose a 22-year-old they rate highly for anything that feels like a bargain for the buyer.
Letting Balde go on the cheap is not part of the plan. At the same time, the decision to green-light Mendes to find a move signals a clear openness to a sale if the right bid lands.
With the door to an exit now ajar, Barcelona’s sporting department have already started combing the market for a new left-back. Without Balde, the left side would fall to Cancelo and Gerard Martin, a thin rotation for a club that expects to fight on multiple fronts deep into the season.
For United, it becomes a familiar question: pay a premium for a ready-made starter from the European elite, or pivot to a cheaper, emerging option like Salinas and spend the saved millions elsewhere?
