Manchester United Prepare for Champions League Match Against Sabah
Carrington was busy and loud this morning. Manchester United’s players were back on the grass, the tempo high, the focus sharp, with the first night of their Champions League campaign looming into view.
Michael Carrick’s side host Azerbaijan champions Sabah at Old Trafford tomorrow at 8pm, a fixture that already carries a hint of jeopardy given the contrasting form of the two teams.
Sabah flying, United stuttering
Sabah arrive in Manchester in ruthless early-season form. Three league games played, eight goals scored, none conceded. They have not been troubled yet.
United, by contrast, are still trying to find their rhythm in the Premier League. One win, one draw, one defeat from their opening three matches tells the story of a side searching for consistency. More worrying is the defensive record: two goals conceded in every game so far, including against newly-promoted Ipswich Town and Hull City.
For a club that measures itself by European nights, that simply cannot continue. Carrick knows it. The players know it. A strong, controlled performance on home turf on Thursday is not just desirable; it feels necessary.
Carrick’s squad picture: key absences and timely boosts
The morning session at Carrington offered a clearer view of Carrick’s options as he juggles form and fitness.
Amad Diallo remains sidelined, still working his way back from the minor issue he picked up in pre-season. Matthijs de Ligt is also not yet fully back with the group as he continues his recovery from the back injury that cut short his 2025/26 campaign last November.
The list of players involved in training underlined both the depth and the gaps in this United squad:
- Goalkeepers: Lammens, Darlow, Mee, Honor.
- Defenders: Dalot, Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro, Heaven, Martinez, Amass.
- Midfielders: Santos, Mount, Tielemans, Mainoo, Fernandes, Thwaites.
- Forwards: Dorgu, Cunha, Rashford, Mbeumo, Zirkzee, Lacey, Sesko.
The standout sight for United supporters? Marcus Rashford in full training.
Rashford was withdrawn on 70 minutes at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday after feeling some discomfort, a change that sparked concern given his importance to Carrick’s attacking structure. Post-match, the manager explained that the decision was precautionary. The forward has since been widely praised for an “outstanding” and “sharp” display in that game, and his presence with the group today is a major positive ahead of Sabah.
Luke Shaw, United’s only established senior left-back, did not train. His absence, though, is not injury-related. He was granted a designated rest day, according to BBC Sport’s Simon Stone, and is not considered a doubt on fitness grounds.
Young blood on the fringes
With Shaw resting, the door opened again for Harry Amass. The young full-back trained with the first team as he continues to wait for his first minutes under Carrick.
His involvement adds a hint of intrigue to the left-back situation. For now, he remains on the fringes, but inclusion in these sessions keeps him close to the action and ready if called upon.
A night that must set the tone
United’s recent European history has been littered with false starts and missed opportunities. Carrick’s task is to ensure this campaign feels different from the very first whistle.
Sabah arrive confident, free-scoring and unbreached in their domestic league. United arrive under a little pressure, still leaking goals and still searching for a settled shape. Old Trafford expects a statement.
The stage is set. Now it’s down to Carrick’s players to decide whether this season’s European story begins with a warning sign or a warning shot.
