Manchester United Contract Decisions: Key Players at Risk of Leaving
Manchester United are braced for a decisive few months as contract calls loom over eight players who could walk away for nothing next summer – including captain Bruno Fernandes and vice-captain Harry Maguire.
Fernandes has just delivered the clearest possible reminder of his value, smashing a hat-trick and adding an assist in Sunday’s 5-2 win over Ipswich. United know what that sort of influence costs in the modern market. They also know he can leave for free in a year.
Fernandes first in the queue
The club hold an option to extend Fernandes’ current deal by 12 months, but that safety net is not enough on its own. Old Trafford chiefs are working on a new long-term contract worth around £350,000 a week, with the aim of tying him down before the end of the campaign.
He is the priority. The rest are on trial.
Seven other players head into a pivotal season with no such guarantees. For them, the next few months will decide whether they are part of the next United cycle or simply passengers on the way out.
Defence under the microscope
United’s hierarchy have already poured money into midfield and attack in recent summers. The backline is next in line for surgery, and that reality hangs over several big names.
Luke Shaw, now 31 and on £200,000 a week, is out of contract next year. According to The Sun, he will likely have to accept a pay cut if he wants to extend his stay in Manchester. The club’s public hunt for a new left-back has only sharpened the focus on his future and raised the question: is Shaw still the long-term answer, or a fading pillar in a defence about to be rebuilt?
Behind him, Harry Amass is waiting. The young full-back, who spent last season on loan at Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday, has effectively become Shaw’s understudy this term. Yet United were prepared to move him on in the summer, a clear sign that his own status is far from secure despite his current role.
At centre-back, the picture is just as complex. Lisandro Martinez has entered the final year of his contract. United can trigger a one-year extension and are expected to do so to protect their position. When fit, Martinez has been a consistently strong performer, but injuries have repeatedly disrupted his rhythm and denied him a sustained run as the defensive lynchpin he was signed to be.
Maguire, 33, signed a one-year deal with an option for another 12 months back in April. He has since become Michael Carrick’s vice-captain and has started every game he has been available for under the manager. His leadership and reliability have pushed him back to the forefront, yet age and competition are closing in.
Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are emerging as the next generation of central defenders. Their rise will inevitably shape how long United commit to Maguire at the heart of the defence. Do they double down on experience, or clear a path for youth?
Youngsters at a crossroads
Three academy products – Harry Amass, Jack Fletcher and Tyler Fletcher – are all under contract until the summer of 2027, but that date is less a comfort and more a countdown.
The two Fletchers, both midfielders, face a crowded route to the first team. United’s heavy investment in midfield has stacked the deck against them, leaving their path to senior football blocked by big-money signings and established internationals. They must now convince the hierarchy that they are worth the patience and the space in a squad that is being reshaped at pace.
For Amass, the situation is different but just as delicate. Trusted as Shaw’s deputy yet considered expendable in the last window, he sits on a knife-edge between breakthrough and exit.
Heaton’s final call
At the other end of his career, Tom Heaton is approaching a very different kind of decision. The 40-year-old goalkeeper signed a one-year extension in June to stay at the club until next summer. His influence at Carrington is widely recognised; he is a senior voice, a standard-setter, and a sounding board for younger keepers.
If he chooses to retire, United are open to keeping him on in another capacity. His gloves may soon be hung up, but his presence around the club may not disappear with them.
