Manchester United’s Ederson Transfer Faces Medical Concerns
Manchester United’s pursuit of Ederson has veered from routine to delicate, with a deal once thought to be wrapped up now sitting in a grey area after medical checks raised concerns over the midfielder’s knee.
United had struck what looked a straightforward agreement with Atalanta: £35 million up front, another £3.8 million in add-ons, a four-year contract ready, and a timeline that pointed to an early July unveiling. The 27-year-old Brazil international was supposed to be one of the early pillars of United’s summer rebuild.
Then the details started to bite.
Ederson suffered a knee injury last season and, during medical tests, that issue triggered fresh scrutiny. Initial checks were conducted while the player was in the United States, having been drafted late into Brazil’s World Cup squad. Once Brazil exited the tournament at the last-16 stage to Norway, further examinations followed.
Those follow-up tests have complicated everything.
Reports in Italy have gone as far as to declare the transfer dead and buried, with Atalanta said to be preparing a new five-year contract to keep Ederson in Bergamo. From their side, it would be a statement of faith in a player who has become central to their midfield and whose value has risen sharply over the past year.
United, though, are not ready to close the file. The club have not ruled out completing the signing and are instead exploring ways to restructure the agreement. That could mean tweaking the guaranteed fee, adjusting the add-ons, or building in protections linked to appearances and fitness. The original framework, set six weeks ago, now looks more like a starting point than a final draft.
While Ederson’s situation hangs in the balance, United are not standing still in midfield.
They have already agreed a £50 million deal with Chelsea for 22-year-old Andrey Santos, a move that underlines the club’s intent to refresh and lower the age profile of their engine room. On top of that, they have drawn up a shortlist of alternatives should they ultimately walk away from Ederson.
Alternatives
High on that list is Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. The Brazilian had been heading towards Atletico Madrid after the Spanish club themselves cooled on a move for Ederson, but Atletico shifted course and signed Morten Hjulmand from Sporting instead. That change has reopened the door.
Gomes is expected to leave Molineux this summer and remains a live option for United. His profile — energetic, aggressive, Premier League-ready — would appeal to a club that cannot afford to miss in such a key area of the pitch.
So United stand at a fork in the road. Push on with Ederson, reshaping a deal around medical risk, or pivot decisively to targets like Gomes. The money is there, the need is obvious. The question now is whether Old Trafford will welcome Ederson after all, or whether this saga becomes the moment United change course in their midfield rebuild.
