Manchester United Pursues Ederson Amidst Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United have moved aggressively to the front of the queue for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, putting a lucrative contract on the table as they look to reshape the heart of their team – with Arsenal watching the situation closely.
This is not a gentle reset of a midfield. It is a clear-out.
Casemiro is heading for the Old Trafford exit after what has been described as a brilliant season, his departure still carrying a sense of anticlimax given his impact. Questions also hang over Manuel Ugarte’s future. Inside the club, the expectation is that at least two new midfielders arrive, with the possibility of a third if the market breaks their way.
United’s ideal scenario this summer had been to land Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. That dream has drifted. The strong feeling is that the England international will prioritise Manchester City, and his soaring valuation – potentially up towards £120m – has forced United to look elsewhere.
Carlos Baleba is one of those alternatives and is widely viewed as the most advanced deal. He is strongly tipped to become United’s first signing of the summer after clarity emerged over his price, giving the recruitment team a reference point for the rest of their midfield rebuild.
Other names have slid down the list. The numbers around Sandro Tonali are understood to be prohibitive. Doubts about how Adam Wharton would fit have cooled that interest. So attention has shifted to a different profile: Ederson, the relentless Brazilian driving Atalanta’s midfield.
Fabrizio Romano has already confirmed that United are firmly on Ederson’s trail, with Atalanta prepared to cash in. The Italian club are seeking around €45m for the 26-year-old, whose current deal runs to 2027. There is a growing sense in the market that a compromise fee slightly below that figure could be enough.
That valuation has already scared off one major contender. Atletico Madrid, long interested in Ederson, have stepped back over the overall cost of the package.
United have not.
According to Romano’s colleague Mateo Moretto, speaking on Romano’s YouTube channel, United have surged to the front by putting down a substantial contract offer worth around €4.5m a year – roughly £75,000 per week.
“Manchester United would be ready to offer Ederson a net salary of €4.5 million per year. Arsenal has also enquired about him,” Moretto said, adding that United’s proposal outstrips Atletico’s and that the Premier League side currently have the “greatest financial room” to manoeuvre.
The pressure is now on Atalanta. No club has yet reached an agreement with them, but the outlines of the battle are clear: United leading on salary, Atletico cooling, Arsenal lurking.
Romano has echoed that sense of momentum, describing Ederson as “on their list” at United, one of several options but a live one, with the possibility of movement before the window formally opens. He has also highlighted that Atalanta want €45m and that Ederson will not be signing a new deal, sharpening the expectation that this is the summer he goes.
Back in April, Romano framed the Brazilian as a market opportunity waiting to be seized. United tracked him during the period when Ruben Amorim was in the frame for the manager’s job and people inside the club have long rated him. The appeal is simple: a high-level midfielder on what is described as a non-excessive salary, available for a total package – fee, wages, commissions – that still sits below the very top bracket, even with Atalanta insisting on their €45m stance.
Premier League clubs have taken note. Atletico Madrid are understood to have had an agreement with the player’s camp at one stage but not with Atalanta, leaving the door open. United have walked through it first. Arsenal are considering following.
David Ornstein of The Athletic has suggested the Gunners could yet step into the race, even as managerial uncertainty across Europe slows down much of the early transfer business. He has pointed out that many players are waiting to see who will be in the dugout before committing, and that the World Cup later this year will delay a lot of moves, concentrating the real frenzy into the back end of the window.
Ederson, though, is one deal Ornstein expects to move early. With a year left on his contract, no sign of a renewal and all parties aligned on an exit, the midfielder is widely seen as one of the more straightforward high-level transfers on the market. Suitors believe a figure around €40m might be enough; Atalanta are aiming closer to €50m. Somewhere in that gap, a deal is likely to be struck.
Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and others are all in the conversation. Ederson’s agent is said to be working hard to turn that interest into concrete offers.
United’s rebuild does not stop in midfield. The club are also targeting reinforcements on the left side of their attack and have made an approach for a highly rated Lyon talent, who could be available at what is being described as a bargain fee.
Before any of that, though, comes the decision in the dugout. United’s first official act of the summer is expected to be the confirmation of Michael Carrick’s appointment. The board has unanimously backed the 44-year-old, with eight other candidates ruled out, clearing the path for a former club stalwart to take charge.
If Carrick walks into Old Trafford with Ederson already on the way, it would send a clear message: this is not a gentle evolution of United’s midfield, but a hard reset built around power, legs and control. The question now is whether Arsenal, or anyone else, are prepared to disrupt that plan.
