Manchester United Pursue Late Left-Back and Centre-Back Solutions
Manchester United have spent the summer tearing up and rebuilding the middle of their team. Now, with the window ticking into its final days, the edges of Michael Carrick’s squad are fraying.
Around £150 million has already gone into the engine room. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans has come in from Aston Villa, and Carlos Baleba has been prised from Brighton. After years spent overhauling the attack and defence, United finally attacked the heart of the pitch.
Yet the squad still looks one defender short. Maybe two.
Left-back hunt turns into scramble
Left-back has become the problem position Carrick cannot quite solve.
Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract. Patrick Dorgu, signed with promise, is viewed more as a winger than a natural full-back by his manager. The balance on that side of the pitch remains fragile, and every day closer to deadline night sharpens the urgency.
United’s preferred targets have drifted out of reach. One by one, the big, long-term options have either proved too expensive or simply unavailable. That has forced a shift in strategy.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano says United are now actively exploring a short-term solution, revisiting a route they know well.
“I will not be surprised if they [United] end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee, so maybe not a superstar name like Balde, because they considered Balde... but the deal is too expensive,” Romano said on his YouTube show.
The template is clear in his mind.
“But just as a comparison, you remember when United signed Sergio Reguilon? [It will be] something similar. That kind of player, an experienced left-back who can provide competition and also an international profile.”
Not a marquee arrival. A steady one. A defender who can plug the gap, push Shaw, and buy United time to work out a long-term plan for the position.
Chelsea’s Tosin offered as centre-back injuries bite
While the left flank dominates the to-do list, United’s centre-back situation has quietly turned into another headache.
Injuries to Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have stripped away depth in an area Carrick wanted locked down before the season settled into its relentless rhythm. According to talkSPORT, United now want to add another centre-half before the window closes.
That search has led them back to Chelsea.
United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Tosin Adarabioyo, with the 28-year-old increasingly on the fringes at Stamford Bridge. He was left out of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham, and his No. 4 shirt has already gone to new signing Valentin Barco – a clear signal of where he stands in the pecking order.
Tosin, a Manchester City academy product, spent 17 years with the club after joining in 2003. He made his senior debut in 2016 but managed just eight first-team appearances before moving to Fulham in 2020, where he established himself as a regular Premier League defender. Now, he could be available for around £20 million.
For United, he represents something very specific: a defender with Premier League experience, entering his prime, potentially available at a fee that fits within a late-window budget.
TalkSPORT also report that United hold an interest in Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong. That is where the door appears to slam shut. The teenager is viewed as ‘untouchable’ at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea unwilling to even entertain a sale.
So United circle back to the realities of the market. A short-term left-back. A mid-range fee for Tosin to shore up the middle. No superstar arrivals, no grand statement, just the kind of late-window pragmatism that can quietly define a season.
With the clock running down, Carrick and the Old Trafford hierarchy have a choice: act now with stop-gap solutions, or risk going into the autumn one injury away from a defensive crisis.
