Manchester United's Left-Back Search: Raum in the Mix
Manchester United have drawn up a shortlist for a new left-back – and David Raum is on it – but the club are stalling over whether to commit serious money to the RB Leipzig defender in the final days of the window.
United have already thrown around £150m at their midfield rebuild this summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That spend has left other parts of the squad exposed, none more so than left-back, where the club can no longer trust the fitness of Luke Shaw across a full season.
Lewis Hall had emerged as the preferred solution. The Newcastle United defender is widely understood to be United’s top target for the position, and there is said to be buy-in from the player’s side. The problem? Newcastle have shut the door on a deal this summer. No negotiation, no loan, no compromise.
So United have had to look elsewhere. That search has led them to Raum.
Raum on the list – but United unsure
According to BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, the 28-year-old Germany international features on United’s left-back shortlist. Raum is entering the final year of his contract at RB Leipzig and finished last season with ten goal involvements in the Bundesliga, a strong return for a full-back who offers real attacking thrust from the flank.
Leipzig would ideally like around €40m for him, roughly £34m, but there is an acceptance that his contract situation may drag that figure down. A sale now prevents him walking for nothing later.
Raum himself has already acknowledged that the market is moving around him. Speaking this week, he said:
“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract. I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”
The interest is real. The decision from Manchester is not.
United are described as “dithering” over whether to commit what is seen internally as a relatively large sum on a player approaching 30, when a younger option with more resale value could yet emerge. With funds already heavily allocated to midfield, every remaining pound is being weighed.
Romano: United want a ‘guarantee’ at left-back
Time, though, is running out. With the window entering its final stretch, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano insists United are still actively pushing to bring in a left-back before the deadline – and he expects movement.
“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back. I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee. So maybe not a superstar name like Balde because they considered Balde. They had a call with Jorge Mendes one week ago, but the deal is too expensive.
“Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now. Then if they change I will let you know. But, just as a comparison, you remember when Man Utd signed Sergio Reguilon from I think it was Tottenham on loan, something similar.
“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile.
“So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”
So the profile is clear: experienced, reliable, international-level, not necessarily glamorous. Raum fits that description. So do others.
The question now is whether United commit serious money to a 28-year-old in Raum, or pivot late towards a cheaper, short-term fix that echoes the Reguilon deal. With Shaw’s fitness a constant concern and the clock ticking, hesitation carries its own price.
