Manchester United's Left-Back Search Hits a Wall: Maatsen Untouchable
Manchester United’s late push for a new left-back has hit a firm brick wall in Birmingham.
Ian Maatsen, targeted over the weekend as a potential solution on the flank, is going nowhere. Aston Villa have shut the door, locked it, and thrown away the key.
Villa make Maatsen ‘untouchable’
United sounded out Villa about Maatsen after identifying left-back as the one position they can strengthen before the window closes without first offloading a player. The approach was confirmed by multiple reporters, with the 24-year-old Dutchman quickly emerging as a serious option.
Then came the reality check.
Sky Sports reporter Danyal Khan revealed that Villa’s response was blunt: Maatsen is not for sale. Instead of entertaining United’s interest, Villa are preparing to reward him.
“Manchester United explored potential availability of left-back Ian Maatsen but he is set to be offered a new contract by #avfc,” Khan reported, adding that Villa “do not want to sell Maatsen” and plan to table new terms soon.
For United, that turns the search back into a scramble. Khan underlined that the club are still “continuing to monitor options at left-back” and are “ready to move if the right opportunity becomes available,” with the hierarchy weighing the need to reinforce now against pursuing longer-term targets in future windows.
Then, at lunchtime on Monday, Fabrizio Romano removed any lingering doubt.
‘Decision made’ – United move blocked
Romano confirmed that United’s interest was genuine but made it clear the chase is over.
“Aston Villa consider Ian Maatsen as key player; untouchable and he will not be sold this summer,” he wrote. “Manchester United were among clubs interested but #AVFC will not sell Maatsen. Decision made.”
That is as definitive as it gets in late August. United will have to look elsewhere.
Striker question lingers as Zirkzee weighs options
All this plays out against a second subplot at Old Trafford: the Joshua Zirkzee situation.
United are planning to bring in a left-back and could also move for a striker if Zirkzee leaves. The Dutchman has already turned down Fiorentina, but Juventus are circling and have put a structured offer on the table – a €2.5m loan with an option to buy for €30m at the end of the season.
His future remains a live issue, but crucially, United do not need to sell before signing a left-back. That makes the failure to land Maatsen even more frustrating for a recruitment team trying to act decisively before the deadline.
Other left-back avenues close off
Maatsen is not the only left-back United are unlikely to land.
Alejandro Balde, 22, is not expected to move either, with the Barcelona defender determined to stay at the Camp Nou. That avenue looks closed for now.
The longer-term picture is more intriguing. Ben Jacobs has reported that United already have Lewis Hall’s “buy in” over a future move, with a deal potentially being struck in the summer of 2027. Hall, currently at Newcastle, is clearly viewed as a strategic target rather than a quick fix.
Which leaves United facing an awkward possibility: they might go through this window without signing a new left-back at all, then pivot towards Hall in a year’s time.
The deadline is closing in. The Maatsen door is shut. Now the question is simple: do United gamble on waiting for their ideal man, or accept a compromise solution in the next 36 hours?
