This time, United are going younger – and they are moving fast.
Ederson deal advances
Ederson is the closest to the door at Old Trafford. Negotiations with Atalanta are at an advanced stage, with talkSPORT reporting that United are “closing in” on a deal that could reach £43m.
The Brazilian has already given the move the green light and is ready to commit to a five-year contract. For United, that ticks two crucial boxes: a player in his prime years and a fee that fits within a wider rebuild.
The plan is clear. Secure Ederson first, then turn fully towards Mateus Fernandes.
Mateus Fernandes: United push to the front
United have been forced to adjust their summer blueprint. Elliot Anderson, the top target for the midfield revamp, is now expected to head across town to Manchester City. Losing that particular battle has sharpened focus elsewhere.
Attention has shifted to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, and United are pushing hardest. According to CaughtOffside, they now “lead the race” and have become the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with the 21-year-old’s representatives.
They are not alone in the chase. Arsenal have identified the Portuguese midfielder as a possible successor to Christian Norgaard. Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are all monitoring his situation as well.
The difference is that United have already done more of the groundwork. They have invested time in the deal, and that counts in a crowded market.
There is also a powerful pull factor: Bruno Fernandes.
The younger Fernandes is keen on the idea of lining up alongside his compatriot at Old Trafford. The chance to play with the United captain, and to do it in the Champions League, appeals strongly. That ambition aligns neatly with United’s own need to refresh the core of their side with players who can grow into the next era.
Relegation discount and shifting numbers
Early whispers suggested Mateus Fernandes could command a fee of up to £80m. That kind of number would have tested even United’s resolve.
West Ham’s relegation has changed the equation.
CaughtOffside now report that the midfielder is available in the €50-60m range, roughly £43-52m. For a 21-year-old with clear upside and European interest, that is a figure United are prepared to engage with.
Ederson is expected to arrive first, but the move for Fernandes is not far behind. Reports on Saturday indicated United are ready to make a “serious” push once the Brazilian’s transfer is secured, and both deals are said to be edging closer.
A third midfielder on the radar
The rebuild may not stop at two.
If the numbers add up after Ederson and Fernandes, United are considering a third midfield signing. On May 20, the Daily Mail’s United correspondent Chris Wheeler reported that a £20m move for an additional backup option is in the works, with Southampton’s Shea Charles on the list of targets.
Three midfielders in one window would mark a decisive break from the recent past. Casemiro gone. Ugarte likely to follow. Ederson incoming. Mateus Fernandes pursued aggressively. Possibly Charles as depth.
United are not just tweaking the engine room. They are tearing it out and installing a new one. The only question now is how quickly this new midfield can turn potential into control, and control into trophies.
