Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Key Targets and Budget Insights
Manchester United’s summer plans are circling around one clear idea: rip up the midfield script and start again.
The club is preparing for a window in which three new midfielders are expected to arrive, with around £150m reportedly set aside for the rebuild. Names are flying in from all corners of Europe – from Real Madrid and Juventus battles to Premier League raids – and even the darts oche has joined the conversation.
Ugarte, Galatasaray and a Move That Never Was
Manuel Ugarte is heading for the Old Trafford exit, and not for the first time his name is echoing around another club’s boardroom.
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Galatasaray have held strong interest in the Uruguayan, who is widely expected to leave United this summer. Several Serie A clubs are also in the frame, sensing an opportunity as United reshuffle the pack.
Ugarte could already have been playing his football in Turkiye. He was a “very concrete” topic at Galatasaray almost a year ago, with talks held over a potential move. The deal collapsed before it ever reached the finish line, and the trail went cold.
Whether the Turkish champions revive that interest ahead of the 2026/27 season remains an open question.
Luke Littler Joins the Recruitment Drive
The transfer noise around United has even dragged in one of the most talked-about names in darts.
Luke Littler, the teenage phenomenon and world champion, is a committed Manchester United fan and has made his feelings crystal clear on one target: Aurelien Tchouameni.
Speaking to SportsBoom, Littler urged the Real Madrid midfielder to head for Old Trafford and take over from Casemiro at the base of United’s midfield. He referenced recent training-ground flashpoints at Madrid and turned them into a direct plea.
“I'm sure you've seen some scrapping going on in Real Madrid and we're interested in Tchouameni. Come on Tchouameni, come on, replace Casemiro for that defence midfielder spot," he said.
Littler also threw his support behind Michael Carrick to become permanent head coach, while acknowledging the concern that the former midfielder could follow a similar path to Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The message was still clear: Carrick, in his eyes, is ready.
Tchouameni Turmoil in Madrid
United’s interest in Tchouameni is not just fan fiction. The Frenchman’s situation at Real Madrid has taken a dramatic turn.
Reports of an altercation with Federico Valverde were followed by an official Real statement confirming Valverde had been taken to hospital. The fallout has exposed deeper cracks in the dressing room.
Spanish outlet AS has since reported that Madrid have “opened the exit door” to Tchouameni. The club are said to be fully aware of a fractured squad dynamic and are weighing up the sale of several star players. Tchouameni is firmly on that list of possible departures.
For a United side craving a commanding presence in midfield, the timing is intriguing.
Cole Palmer: Opportunity Declined
While United scan Europe for midfield and defensive reinforcements, one high-profile Premier League attacker is being left to pass by.
Cole Palmer had been linked with a move from Chelsea to Old Trafford after a standout season. With Chelsea unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League – a competition Palmer has publicly insisted the club must reach – the door appeared to be ajar.
United have chosen not to walk through it. According to The Mirror, club decision-makers have ruled out a summer move for Palmer, deciding their priorities lie elsewhere.
Last year was about bolstering the attack. This year, the focus is on midfield steel and defensive stability. Palmer, for all his talent, does not fit the brief.
Forest, Tonali and a Crowded Shortlist
United’s recruitment net stretches beyond Madrid and London. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are also firmly in view.
Elliot Anderson, one of Forest’s standout midfielders, is high on United’s list – but Manchester City currently lead the race for his signature. Forest’s hopes of holding on to him have taken a hit after their Europa League semi-final defeat to Aston Villa ended any chance of Champions League football next season.
With European ambitions dented, the likelihood of Anderson staying at the City Ground has “dwindled significantly,” handing United a small but notable boost. Centre-back Murillo, another Forest asset linked with Old Trafford, finds himself in a similar position. No Champions League, fewer reasons to stay.
Then there is Sandro Tonali. The Newcastle midfielder has emerged as one of United’s primary targets, and his situation is attracting heavyweight interest.
Juventus are keen but, according to Tuttomercatoweb, cannot match Newcastle’s €100m (£86m) valuation. United can. The same report claims they are already “readying an offer” as they look to anchor their midfield with proven top-level quality.
Tonali is just one of several names on a list that stretches across leagues and styles. But he fits the profile: technical, combative, and expensive.
A Summer That Will Define the Spine
Three midfielders. A £150m budget. Big decisions on Ugarte’s replacement, on whether to pounce for Tchouameni, on how hard to push for Tonali, Anderson, and others.
United have chosen not to chase Cole Palmer. They may not get a free run at Anderson. They might be walking into a bidding war for Tonali. And somewhere in all of this, a darts world champion is calling out to a Real Madrid midfielder on their behalf.
The names will come and go in the rumour mill. The money will be spent. The only question is whether this midfield rebuild finally gives Manchester United the spine they have been missing for years.
