Manchester United's New Season Begins: Carrick's Test of Intent

Manchester United walk into the new Premier League season at Hull City on Saturday lunchtime with expectation heavy on their shoulders and a clear demand on Michael Carrick. This is his first full campaign as permanent manager. There is no hiding place now.

United finished third last season and are back in the Champions League after a three-year absence. That return brings a sharper edge to everything they do. A newly promoted Hull side on opening day looks inviting on paper. In reality, it is the kind of fixture that exposes any early-season rust.

Carrick knows it. So does his squad.

Injuries bite, but midfield rebuilt

The team sheet will carry a few asterisks.

Matthijs de Ligt is still out with a lower back problem, a significant absentee for a defence already under scrutiny. Manuel Ugarte, signed to add bite and control in midfield, is set to miss most of the season with a knee injury. Tom Heaton is also unavailable.

Mason Mount’s situation is more delicate. He suffered a foot injury in the 1–1 pre-season draw with PSG and faces a late fitness test. The staff will push the decision as close to kickoff as they dare.

Benjamin Seško has rejoined full training after a shin issue, yet his involvement remains uncertain. The plan is not to rush him, even if his absence changes the look of United’s front line.

The heart of the side, though, is being rewired. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are expected to anchor a new-look central midfield. Santos, a £50m arrival from Chelsea, played in all six pre-season friendlies and has already convinced Carrick he can handle a starting role. Tielemans, who came in later after helping Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, completed 90 minutes in the final warm-up game against AC Milan. The message is clear: they are ready to run this team.

Defence in transition, attack with a twist

At the back, there is change and compromise.

Ayden Heaven is set to start alongside Harry Maguire in central defence. Lisandro Martínez managed only about half an hour of pre-season football and is likely to begin on the bench, where he should be joined by Kobbie Mainoo. Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw keep their places at full-back, giving Carrick at least some continuity in the wide defensive areas.

Up front, circumstance has created opportunity. With Seško still touch and go, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to lead the line after an eye-catching pre-season. His movement and work rate have impressed, and this is his chance to grab the role before the Champions League schedule kicks in.

Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha are set to operate from the flanks, offering pace and direct running either side of Bruno Fernandes. The captain will again pull the strings in his favoured number ten position, the creative hub around which everything turns.

Behind them, Senne Lammens continues in goal, trusted to build on his pre-season rhythm.

Predicted XI and the stakes at Hull

All signs point towards Carrick rolling out a 4-2-3-1 at the MKM Stadium:

Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Tielemans, Santos; Diallo, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.

Kickoff is at 12:30 BST on Saturday, 22 August 2026, with live coverage on TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports Ultimate and HBO Max in the UK.

The stage is set: a promoted side at home, a heavyweight visitor under pressure to prove last season was a platform, not a peak. For Carrick, this is not just an opening fixture. It is the first real verdict on what his Manchester United are going to be.
