Manchester United Pursue Josip Stanisic for Defensive Reinforcements
Manchester United spent the summer ripping up their midfield at Michael Carrick’s request. Three new faces arrived — Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba — as INEOS even pushed a late move for Louis Page that never got over the line.
Last year, the co-owners had thrown their weight behind the attack. This time it was the engine room. Which leaves one obvious conclusion: next summer, the spotlight swings to the backline.
Carrick wanted defensive reinforcements now. He didn’t get them. The 20-time English champions chose to sit tight, keep the budget locked and ride with what they have. For most of United’s defenders, that means a season played under a cloud. All but two are effectively fighting for their futures.
And history tells you something else about United in this kind of situation: they love a defender who can do a bit of everything.
United eye Stanisic as backline rebuild looms
That is where Josip Stanisic comes in.
The Bayern Munich defender has emerged on United’s radar, with the Old Trafford hierarchy tracking one of the most adaptable players in European football. The Croatia international can operate anywhere across the back four. Right-back is his natural role, but he can slot in at centre-back and, thanks to his two-footedness, cover on the left as well.
His numbers last season underline that flexibility. Stanisic made 43 appearances in all competitions: 26 at right-back, 15 at left-back and two in central defence. Coaches love that kind of reliability. Recruitment departments do too.
From United’s perspective, the fit is obvious. They need depth at right-back. They need competition and cover at centre-back. They need someone who can handle the demands of domestic and European football without blinking. Stanisic ticks every box.
Heavyweight interest and a heavy price
United are not alone. According to Fussballdaten, they are one of several European giants monitoring the 26-year-old. PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool are all in the frame, watching his development and his role in the Bayern squad.
That kind of company usually means one thing: a difficult deal and an expensive one.
Stanisic is under contract at Bayern until 2029, and the Bundesliga champions are in no rush to cash in. Reports suggest Bayern will only seriously entertain offers in the region of £47 million to £56 million — or, put another way, around €55 million to €65 million just to start negotiations. On top of that, the German club are expected to push for sizeable performance-related bonuses and a sell-on clause in any agreement.
The message from Munich is clear: if you want him, you pay.
From a pure financial standpoint, United should be capable of meeting that valuation. The question is not whether they can. It is whether they will — and whether Stanisic actually wants to leave.
At the Allianz Arena, he is a regular and trusted member of the squad, with significant Bundesliga and European Cup experience already behind him. Walking away from that to step into a defensive rebuild at Old Trafford is not a straightforward decision for any player.
There is another complication. INEOS have made no secret of their preference for Premier League-proven signings. Stanisic, for all his quality, does not fit that template. If that internal policy holds firm, it could turn a logical football move into a political battle inside the club.
United’s backline will demand answers next summer. The only real unknown is whether Josip Stanisic will be part of them.
