Manchester United Pursue Tchouaméni as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United have gone back to Real Madrid for Aurélien Tchouaméni, refusing to let their preferred Casemiro replacement slip away without a fight.

United’s need is clear. Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami has ripped out the natural anchor of their midfield, leaving a gap that short-term fixes or half-measures will not solve. The club want a specialist defensive midfielder, someone young enough to grow with the project but authoritative enough to steady a side that has often looked unbalanced without a true holding player.

Tchouaméni fits that brief almost too perfectly.

United have already been rebuffed once in this window, just as they were when they explored a move last winter. At that stage, and again at the start of the current summer, the Frenchman looked set to stay put in Madrid. Talks over a contract extension were advanced; the message from Spain was that he was part of the long-term plan.

Yet United have returned to the table. They have asked about Tchouaméni again, keeping him firmly among their leading options as they work through a shortlist of defensive midfielders. While André Santos and Youri Tielemans have arrived to add craft and forward thrust, neither is a natural shield in front of the back four. Both lean towards attack. Tchouaméni, by contrast, is built for that deeper role.

He reads danger. He breaks up play. He gives teams structure.

That is exactly what United are missing.

There is, however, a major obstacle. José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season and sees him as central to Madrid’s medium-term plans. Any attempt to prise him away will mean going up against not just Real Madrid’s resolve, but the vision of a coach who has already ring-fenced the player’s future.

United know this will not be a straightforward negotiation. They also know that elite, ready-made defensive midfielders in Tchouaméni’s age bracket rarely come onto the market.

The question now is simple: how far are they prepared to go to turn long-standing admiration into a transfer that could define the next phase of their midfield?
