Manchester United Pursue Tielemans After Ederson Deal Falls Through
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has taken another sharp turn, and this time the compass is pointing firmly towards Youri Tielemans.
With the Ederson move from Atalanta dramatically collapsing late in the process, United have wasted no time switching targets. According to David Ornstein, the club are now in advanced talks to sign Tielemans from Aston Villa, with the Belgium international emerging as a leading candidate to bolster Erik ten Hag’s engine room.
From “100 per cent confirmed” to completely off
Just days ago, United believed they had their man in Ederson. The Brazilian’s transfer was described as “100 per cent confirmed in June”, only for the deal to unravel after a series of medical checks raised concerns on the Old Trafford side.
Fabrizio Romano outlined the sequence: United delayed finalising the transfer while they ran “several sessions of medical tests”. The outcome was decisive. A formal communication was sent to Atalanta confirming that the move was off. Atalanta’s stance remains that Ederson is “100% fit” and ready to play, as he showed with Brazil at the World Cup, and they are content to welcome him back with a year left on his contract.
For United, though, the line was drawn. Ederson is not happening. The search had to move on quickly.
Tielemans opportunity emerges
United’s summer brief is clear: two or three midfielders, a full-back and a left‑winger as a minimum. With Andrey Santos lined up from Chelsea as the first midfield arrival, attention has now turned to a very different profile of player.
Ornstein reports that United have “identified an opportunity” to land Tielemans from Aston Villa, with talks at an advanced stage. Despite interest from elsewhere, the 29-year-old is understood to favour a move to Old Trafford.
It is not a move many saw coming. Tielemans, who joined Villa after his Leicester City spell, featured for Unai Emery’s side as they pushed United close in the Premier League table last season, finishing just one place below them. Yet the deal now being discussed would give Ten Hag exactly what his midfield has lacked at times: proven Premier League experience, composure on the ball and a player who knows the demands of English football inside out.
Ornstein notes that contact is ongoing between all parties as they work to finalise terms. The move would add “much-needed quality and experience” to a zone of the pitch United have ring‑fenced as a priority area this summer.
A £35m clause changes the game
The potential transfer has been sharpened further by a key detail. According to Daily Telegraph journalist John Percy, Tielemans has a £35m release clause in his Villa contract, and a switch to Manchester United is regarded as “very likely”.
That clause gives United clarity and leverage. No drawn-out fee negotiations, no auction. Meet the clause, convince the player, get it done. For a club trying to reshape a midfield in one window, the simplicity of that mechanism is significant.
Villa, for their part, are already moving to reshape their own midfield. Percy reports they are in the final stages of signing Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in a club-record deal, a move that would smooth Tielemans’ exit and maintain Emery’s options in the centre of the pitch.
United’s midfield puzzle
United’s plan is starting to show its contours. Santos would bring youth and upside. Tielemans, if completed, would bring know-how and a ready-made Premier League pedigree. The collapse of the Ederson deal has not slowed the club’s intent; it has simply redirected it.
The question now is whether United can close this Tielemans move with the same speed they have shown in identifying him. At £35m, with the player leaning towards Old Trafford and talks already advanced, the path is there.
In a summer where United cannot afford missteps in midfield, this is a deal they look determined to walk all the way to the line.
