Manchester United Faces Sabah FK in Champions League Return
Manchester United feel the lights again. After three years in the wilderness, the Champions League anthem returns to Old Trafford on Thursday night – and with it, a different kind of pressure.
Michael Carrick’s side opens its group-stage campaign against Azerbaijani debutants Sabah FK on Sept. 10, a fixture that sits awkwardly between the emotion of a European homecoming and the cold reality of a Manchester derby against City just three days later.
Carrick has to juggle it all. He has to do it with a patched-up squad.
Injury headaches before a European return
The absentee list is long and painful. Matthijs de Ligt is out with a back problem. Manuel Ugarte’s knee keeps him sidelined. Carlos Baleba and Amad Diallo are both missing with ankle injuries, while Tom Heaton is unavailable because of a hamstring issue.
There is more uncertainty. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford are all doubts for Thursday’s match. None of them can be pencilled in with confidence, which forces Carrick to lean on the depth United have built over the summer.
The opponent, on paper, offers some breathing room. Sabah FK have never played in the Champions League group stage. They arrive at Old Trafford as unknowns at this level, facing a club that measures itself by European nights and knockout runs, not just participation.
But United’s margin for error is thin. Drop points in a home opener and the tone of a campaign can sour quickly, especially with City looming on Sunday.
How United could line up vs Sabah
Carrick is expected to rotate, but not rip up the spine of his side. The projected XI still carries plenty of weight and technical quality:
- Goalkeeper: Senne Lammens
- Defenders: Diogo Dalot, Lenny Yoro, Lisandro Martínez, Noussair Mazraoui
- Holding midfielders: Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans
- Attacking midfielders: Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha
- Forward: Benjamin Šeško
It is a team built to control the ball and pin Sabah back. Dalot and Mazraoui offer width and delivery from full-back, while Yoro and Martínez give United a blend of youth, anticipation and left-footed balance at the heart of defence.
In midfield, Mainoo’s composure and range of passing should set the tempo, with Tielemans alongside him to recycle possession and step into advanced areas when space opens up. Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes remains the conductor, linking play and driving into pockets where he can hurt opponents.
The front line has edge and movement. Mbeumo’s direct running, Cunha’s ability to drift between the lines and Šeško’s physical presence through the middle give United multiple ways to break Sabah down without overloading minutes into the legs of players needed against City.
Carrick cannot afford to treat this as a gentle warm-up. Not with Old Trafford expecting a statement, not with the Champions League back on the schedule, and not with a derby that could define the early weeks of the season waiting on Sunday.
