Manchester United Target Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Replacement
Manchester United’s search for life after Casemiro has taken a familiar turn – back across town, towards a midfielder who once wore sky blue.
Felix Nmecha, now starring for Germany at the World Cup and anchoring Borussia Dortmund’s midfield, has emerged as a serious option for United, according to reports in Germany. The 25-year-old, who came through Manchester City’s academy, is attracting heavyweight attention after a standout season in the Bundesliga and an eye-catching start to the tournament.
The latest reminder of his rise came in Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao. Nmecha opened the scoring in style, lashing a first-time, right-footed strike into the top corner from around 20 yards. It was the sort of finish that turns heads on its own, but his all-round performance did the rest – relentless running, breaking up counters, driving from box to box.
Clubs have noticed. So have United.
From blue to yellow – and possibly red?
Nmecha left City in 2021 after a successful loan at Anderlecht, choosing Wolfsburg as the place to build his senior career. Dortmund moved quickly two years later, convinced they could refine his blend of physicality, athleticism and tactical discipline. They have been proved right.
Now, reports from Sky Sports Deutschland say United are among several clubs in the race for his signature. The twist? City, his former employers and United’s neighbours, are also credited with an interest.
Real Madrid are in the conversation too, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to be an admirer. This is not a quiet market for a fringe player. This is a battle for a midfielder entering his prime.
Dortmund, though, hold the cards. Nmecha is under contract until 2030, and the structure of that deal gives the German club plenty of breathing room. A release clause – set at £61m – only becomes active in the summer of 2027. The message from Dortmund is clear: they expect any move to happen in that window, not this one.
They are not rushing to cash in. They do not need to.
Agent cools talk of an imminent move
Nmecha’s camp is striking the same tone. Speaking to Bild, his agent Tobi Alabi stressed that the midfielder is settled and focused.
“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development,” Alabi said, highlighting the trust and platform the club have provided.
He underlined Nmecha’s trajectory and the inevitable interest that follows: when a player performs, questions about his future come with the territory. But the priority, Alabi insisted, remains Dortmund – giving everything for the club and helping the team chase its targets.
For United, that stance turns any immediate move into a complex negotiation rather than a quick raid. The interest is real. The timing may not be.
United’s midfield rebuild gathers pace
What is not in doubt is United’s determination to reshape their midfield. Casemiro, once the cornerstone of their engine room, is edging towards the exit, and the club has already moved decisively for one replacement.
A £39m deal for Atalanta and Brazil midfielder Ederson is close, with the player expected to undergo his medical while on World Cup duty. He brings bite, range and energy – qualities United badly need.
Nmecha, though, represents something slightly different: a long-striding, two-way presence who can shield a defence, spring attacks and cover huge swathes of grass. A modern, multi-purpose midfielder who knows Manchester, knows the Premier League’s demands from the fringes at City, and is now proving himself on the biggest stages.
If Dortmund stick to their plan, United may have to wait – or pay a premium well before that 2027 clause kicks in. With City and Real Madrid circling, the margin for hesitation shrinks fast.
United wanted Casemiro to be a short-term solution on a long-term problem. The question now is whether they see Felix Nmecha as the player to finally close that chapter – and how far they are willing to go to bring him back to Manchester.
