Manchester United Target £40m Transfer for Brighton's Ferdi Kadioglu
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp twist, with sensational claims in Turkey suggesting Brighton’s player of the year, Ferdi Kadioglu, is on the brink of a £40m move to Old Trafford.
The story comes from Turkish outlet AS Marca, who state United are “set to transfer” the 26-year-old, with former club Fenerbahçe due 10% of the fee – around €4.7m – as part of a sell-on clause.
Nothing has been confirmed by major UK or European reporters yet. But the timing is raising eyebrows on the south coast.
Brighton brace for more departures
Brighton are used to this. Their best players rarely stay untouched for long.
Carlos Baleba is already primed to join United in a deal worth £65m plus £5m in add-ons. Right winger Yankuba Minteh could be next out of the door, with Liverpool weighing up a third bid believed to be in the £65m-£70m range.
Yet it was neither Baleba nor Minteh who walked away with Brighton’s player of the year award last season. That honour went to Kadioglu, whose performances at left-back have turned him into one of the Premier League’s most reliable and dynamic full-backs.
Now, just as talk of a move to Manchester begins to swirl, Brighton appear to be closing in on another left-back.
Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Brighton & Hove Albion and Young Boys have reached an agreement worth €12m for Jaouen Hadjam, with additional add-ons included. Hadjam is expected to sign a long-term deal until June 2031 and is due to fly to England within 24 hours to complete the transfer.
The sequence is hard to ignore: Brighton’s standout left-back linked with United, Brighton move for a new left-back, and quickly.
United’s left-back hunt takes a new turn
United’s need in that position is no secret. The club want a left-back who can compete with – and ultimately take over from – Luke Shaw before the window closes.
Lewis Hall has long been viewed as the preferred option, but Newcastle have dug in. Having already cashed in on Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, the Magpies are refusing to entertain offers for Hall. Head coach Matthias Jaissle underlined that stance last weekend, insisting there is “no chance” Hall leaves.
Attention has also been trained on Alejandro Balde. United have made contact with his agent, Jorge Mendes, as the defender’s camp quietly surveys the market.
ESPN reported that United’s ideal scenario with Balde would be a loan with an option to buy. Balde, for his part, would rather stay at Barcelona, though he is prepared to leave if the club decide to sell and accept a suitable bid. A face-to-face meeting with Hansi Flick is expected to be pivotal in clarifying his future.
Amid those complications, Kadioglu’s name has suddenly surged to the front of the queue.
A deal with questions still attached
The Turkish reports present the Kadioglu deal as close, but there is still a clear gap between the noise and formal confirmation. No leading UK outlet has yet verified the story, and Brighton have not commented.
What does lend the rumour weight is Brighton’s apparent readiness to move for Hadjam, a like-for-like positional replacement. A club that plans as meticulously as Brighton rarely buys in bulk without a knock-on effect somewhere in the squad.
If United do press ahead, they would be landing a defender entering his peak, already proven in the Premier League and versatile enough to fit into different systems – exactly the profile they have struggled to secure in other negotiations this summer.
For Brighton, it would be another major sale, another reinvention. For United, it could be the moment their left side finally stops being a problem and starts becoming a platform.
