Manchester United Target Youri Tielemans After Éderson Deal Complications
Manchester United are closing in on Youri Tielemans, turning to the Aston Villa midfielder after their pursuit of Atalanta’s Éderson hit complications.
Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, is deep in negotiations with Villa over a financial package for the Belgium international. Tielemans, 29, is believed to have a £35m release clause in a contract that still has two years to run, a figure United are prepared to work around as they accelerate plans to rebuild their midfield.
This is not a speculative move. Tielemans arrives with a heavy Premier League footprint and a substantial international résumé. He first landed in England with Leicester City from Monaco in 2019, quickly establishing himself as one of the division’s more refined midfield operators before leaving on a free transfer to join Villa four years later.
For Belgium, his status is even more pronounced. Tielemans has 90 caps and captained his country at the World Cup, where they were knocked out 2-1 by Spain in Friday’s quarter-final. That level of experience, both in pressure matches and tournament football, is precisely what United’s new regime wants at the heart of the pitch.
The urgency is clear. Casemiro’s departure at the end of last season has left a sizeable hole in the centre of Michael Carrick’s team. Manuel Ugarte, for all his energy, is viewed as a depth option rather than a guaranteed starter. Carrick, a former United midfielder who understands the demands of that role as well as anyone, has pushed for a full-scale overhaul in that area.
One piece is already in place. United have agreed a £48m deal, plus £2m in add-ons, for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, a move that underlines the club’s willingness to invest heavily in the position. Éderson was supposed to follow as the second major midfield signing of the summer window, only for that transfer to be thrown into doubt due to unspecified complications in talks with Atalanta.
The momentum has shifted. With the Éderson move stalling, United have pressed ahead with Tielemans, a player long admired across Europe for his passing range and game intelligence. At 29, he is not a typical “project” signing. His potential resale value is minimal, and that is precisely what makes this pursuit so striking.
For years, United’s recruitment has been framed around age profiles, sell-on potential and long-term planning models. Tielemans represents something different: a win-now footballer, a ready-made presence to stabilise a midfield that has too often lurched between eras without ever truly settling.
The cost to Aston Villa would be significant. Tielemans has become an important part of their structure, and losing him would bite even harder given the injury to his compatriot Amadou Onana, who suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament at the World Cup. With Onana facing a long spell out, Villa can ill afford to see another senior Belgian midfielder walk out of the door.
Yet the release clause changes the dynamic. If United meet or come close enough to that £35m figure and the player is keen, Villa’s room for manoeuvre shrinks rapidly.
For Carrick and Wilcox, the equation is simpler. They need authority, experience and reliability in midfield, not just promise. Tielemans offers exactly that. The only question now is whether United are prepared to push this deal over the line quickly, or risk seeing their midfield rebuild stall just as the season’s demands begin to close in.
