Marcus Rashford Backs Jamie Carragher Amid Future Speculation
Marcus Rashford has thrown his support behind Jamie Carragher after growing weary of constant debate around his Manchester United future – and all signs now point to him staying at Old Trafford beyond the summer.
The United forward, back from a season-long loan at Barcelona, reposted a clip from the latest Stick to Football episode on X after Carragher snapped at Gary Neville for once again steering the conversation towards Rashford.
Neville rounded off the show by asking: "Marcus Rashford, what do we think? Last question."
Carragher’s patience snapped.
"Oh ***********. Can we do a podcast without mentioning Rashford? Stop it! Oh my god," he shot back. "It’s like the Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Rashford - there was like a little part of the podcast - the Trent part or the Rashford part."
Neville tried to switch tack, asking: "How is Trent?" only to get another exasperated "Oh my God!" from the former Liverpool defender.
When Neville attempted to clarify – "No, but he’s come back to United" – Carragher shut it down completely: "So what? Oh my God. He’s just a good player for Man United!"
Rashford clearly appreciated the intervention. Reposting the clip, he wrote: "Thanks, Jamie. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day," adding a crying emoji to underline the frustration.
From Barcelona doubts to Old Trafford reset
Only a few weeks ago, the smart money had Rashford leaving United permanently. Barcelona, where he spent last season on loan, held a £26million option to buy and his future looked nailed on to be away from Manchester.
The Catalan club walked away from the clause and turned to Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United instead. That decision has reopened the door at Old Trafford – and Rashford has walked straight through it.
He pulled on a United shirt for the first time in almost two years in a recent friendly against AC Milan, coming off the bench in a defeat that mattered less than the symbolism of his return. At 28, with a league title and a World Cup campaign behind him, he now cuts the figure of a senior pro rather than the academy poster boy.
Inside the training ground, he has stepped into that role. Rashford is understood to be acting as a mentor for several of United’s younger players, a shift in status that has not gone unnoticed by new boss Michael Carrick.
Carrick’s backing and a growing likelihood
Carrick has already held lengthy talks with the England international and, as the Premier League season looms, the manager is preparing as if Rashford will be a key part of his plans.
"He's our player, you know, and he's come back great. He's just like any other player," Carrick said. "I've known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he's been in great spirits since he's been back.
"He's been back two or three days training and it's just pretty normal, to be honest. And we're looking forward to the start of the season."
The transfer window does not close until September 1, so the noise around his future will not vanish overnight. Inside the club, though, the feeling that Rashford will stay grows stronger by the day. His own words point in the same direction: head down, play football, cut out the circus.
He has not played a Premier League game since December 2024, yet he returns from Spain in the best form of his career. At Barcelona he delivered 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances, driving them to the La Liga title – the first league crown of his career and a timely reminder of his ceiling when trusted in a defined role.
Those numbers earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the recent World Cup, restoring his international standing and sharpening the question for United: how do you let that level of production walk away for £26m, especially when he is already in your building?
On Saturday, August 22, Carrick’s side open their Premier League campaign away to newly-promoted Hull City at 12:30pm BST. If Rashford’s name is on that teamsheet, the conversation around him might finally shift from speculation to something far simpler: what can he do for United now he is home again?
