Marcus Rashford has turned his back on a high-profile move to Fenerbahce and is set to stay at Manchester United for the 2026/27 season, according to The Times.
The Turkish club, fresh from securing Champions League qualification, had lined up the 28-year-old as their marquee signing of the summer. They pushed hard. Rashford listened. Then he said no.
He has made it clear he has no interest in a switch to the Super Lig, even with the lure of European nights in Istanbul on the table. For a player who started this summer seemingly ready to walk away from his boyhood club, it marks a striking change of heart.
Rashford’s future has hung over United’s window. His impressive loan spell at Barcelona last season reignited his reputation and fuelled talk of a permanent exit. Earlier in the summer, he was understood to be desperate to leave Old Trafford for good. That urgency has faded.
With the transfer deadline looming next Tuesday, the forward is now locked in on winning back his place and his status at United. He wants back in. The focus is on convincing head coach Michael Carrick he belongs at the centre of the project, not on the fringes of it.
Carrick, for his part, has been openly impressed by what he has seen in pre-season. Rashford’s application and fitness levels in training have drawn praise, and his involvement is already creeping up. He came off the bench in United’s recent defeat to Hull City, replacing Patrick Dorgu, a small but telling step in his reintegration.
The story could easily have gone another way. A return to Camp Nou was Rashford’s preferred option, the romantic sequel to his loan spell in Catalonia. The route was clear on paper: Barcelona held a £26m release clause in his contract. They chose not to use it.
Instead, the Spanish champions pivoted. Their recruitment drive moved elsewhere in the Premier League, with Anthony Gordon arriving from Newcastle United and Karim Adeyemi joining from Borussia Dortmund. Rashford’s door to Barcelona quietly shut.
That decision, combined with his substantial £325,000-a-week wages, narrowed the market dramatically. Few clubs could realistically fund a permanent deal. With days left in the window, United are content to keep their homegrown star, and the player now appears content to stay.
The dynamic between Rashford and Carrick has become central to this U-turn. The manager’s words have carried weight inside the dressing room and with the player himself. Speaking recently about Rashford’s return, Carrick said: “It’s been pretty obvious since Marcus came back training with Kobbie [Mainoo] and Licha [Martinez] pretty much in Dublin that he’s come back fantastically well, you know.”
That endorsement matters. It points to a significant role for Rashford as United prepare to host Ipswich Town on Sunday. For the forward, it will be more than just another league fixture. It will be his first appearance at Old Trafford since December 2024, a return to the stage where his United story began.
The numbers still underline his standing: 138 goals in 427 appearances for the club. He remains one of the most recognisable figures in the dressing room, a player whose voice and presence still carry weight even after a turbulent spell.
For Carrick, keeping Rashford gives him a seasoned international in the final third, bolstering a squad that finished third in the Premier League last season and wants more. For Rashford, it offers something different: one more chance to prove that his future, at least for now, still lies under the lights of Old Trafford.
