Marcus Rashford Adds New Tattoos: The Meaning Behind 14 and 9

Marcus Rashford has found room for two more numbers on his skin – and on his story.

The Manchester United forward has added 14 and 9 to his growing gallery of tattooed shirt numbers, according to Manchester-based artist Dale McGovern, sitting alongside the already familiar 39, 19 and 10.

Each number marks a chapter. None more so than 14.

That was the shirt Rashford pulled on at Barcelona, his first adventure outside England. He wore it while helping the Catalan club to La Liga glory and the Spanish Super Cup, a short but glittering spell that demanded a permanent place on his body. The 14 now lives there as a stamp of that breakthrough away from Old Trafford.

Then comes 9 – another marker of a centre-forward’s burden and pride.

Rashford used the number at Aston Villa before circling back to Manchester United and reclaiming it on his return to Old Trafford. It is the fourth different shirt number he has worn for United, and perhaps the most traditional for a striker, a reminder of the expectation that comes with leading the line.

From 39, the raw academy graduate’s first senior number, through 19 and 10, and now to 14 and 9, his tattoos read like a career timeline. Each digit is a season, a club, a role. Each one tells you where he has been – and hints at how many more numbers this story might yet need.
