Mike Dean's Controversial Refereeing Anecdotes
Mike Dean has sparked a furious reaction after admitting he used to "joke about" and play personal "games" while refereeing Premier League matches.
The former top-flight official, who took charge of 553 Premier League fixtures over more than 20 years, lifted the lid on his behaviour during an appearance on the Jamie Vardy's Having a Party podcast.
Dean’s whistle “games”
Dean, 58, who retired from on-field duties in 2022 before a short stint working as a VAR assistant, told Vardy he would sometimes try to entertain himself during matches by setting private challenges.
"There used to be games that we used to have, as a laugh," he said. "We used to say something like, ‘We’ll kick off now, right? See how long we can go without blowing the whistle.’"
"Done that a few times in the Premier League, before VAR obviously. Went 20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times. Let it go, let it go, let it go."
Dean then described another self-imposed test, this time involving his positioning.
"I used to do another thing in the Premier League. I used to stand in the centre circle and see how long I could stay in the centre circle before I had to leave. That was just me joking about.
"But the lads used to be on the line saying, ‘You can’t’. I said, ‘I’ll try it’. I just used to kind of run around, kind of go, but don’t go out of it. Got about 15 minutes once in one game, without leaving the centre circle."
Bemusement inside refereeing circles
Those comments have not gone down well within the modern refereeing community.
Figures currently involved in officiating are understood to have met Dean’s stories with bemusement, with some privately pointing out the lack of specific detail or verifiable context around the claims.
Refereeing in England is now overseen by the newly rebranded Pro Ref, formerly Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The organisation has been approached for comment on Dean’s remarks.
Agbonlahor: “Are you a child?”
Outside the refereeing world, the backlash has been more direct.
Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor did not hold back when reacting on talkSPORT, slamming Dean for treating elite matches as a stage for personal amusement.
"He's trying to be funny but it’s not funny. You’re not funny, Mike Dean, that sums you up," Agbonlahor said.
"He’s throwing himself under the bus. This is the Premier League. Are you a child?
"It doesn’t sit right with me at all. I was thinking, ‘Mike Dean managed a lot of games I played in’. One word to describe him, I’d say, is a prat."
At a time when trust in officiating is under intense scrutiny, Dean’s anecdotes have done more than raise eyebrows. They’ve reopened an uncomfortable question: what exactly should players and fans expect from those in charge of the biggest league in world football?
