Mikel Arteta on Goalkeeper's Impact: Elevating the Team

Mikel Arteta is in no mood for transfer league tables or greatest-hit debates. What matters to him is simple: his goalkeeper has changed the level of his team.

Speaking before this weekend’s league fixture, the Spanish coach refused to rank his players or label any signing as his standout deal, but he did not hide how central his No 1 has become.

“I don’t know – he’s been a tremendous signing, there is no question about that,” Arteta said when asked if the goalkeeper was his best piece of business. “Whether he is the best or not is just an opinion. It doesn’t matter, we are so happy to have him. He has elevated the team to a different level and now we have to maintain that level.”

That word – elevated – has become a theme around the club. The goalkeeper’s distribution, presence and authority have reshaped the way Arteta’s side build from the back and handle pressure. But the manager was keen to highlight something less visible than passing angles or save percentages.

For Arteta, the real story is mentality.

“I think it’s his mentality,” he said. “David has tremendous quality but he has overcome a lot of difficulties and challenges to reach this point. It wasn’t easy at the beginning, he had to dig in and prove himself. Now, he has the right to be one of the best.”

Those early weeks were unforgiving: intense scrutiny, instant judgment, every mistake magnified. Arteta saw a goalkeeper who did not shrink, who absorbed the noise and responded with performances.

Now, with the team pushing to stay at what their manager calls “a different level”, that resilience has become a reference point in the dressing room. Arteta will not crown him his greatest signing. He prefers something more demanding: a standard that has to be matched every weekend.
