Mikey Johnston Faces Long-Term Injury Setback at West Brom

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a significant blow with midfielder Mikey Johnston facing an “extended period” on the sidelines after a fresh setback to his ankle.

The 27-year-old has managed just one outing this season – the Carabao Cup tie against Rotherham United – despite initially being passed fit following the fracture he suffered in February during a Championship game at Oxford.

Albion’s director of medical, Tony Strudwick, described the problem as “a complex injury” and admitted the club cannot yet put a “specific timeline” on Johnston’s return.

Johnston’s ankle fracture healed in time for pre-season, allowing West Brom to ease him back under a reduced workload. He featured for 45 minutes against both Notts County and Coventry, added 25 minutes against Peterborough, then stepped up to 30 minutes of competitive football in the cup against Rotherham.

That was when the alarm sounded. Johnston reported renewed pain in the same ankle and subsequent scans revealed a further issue. West Brom sought opinions from two leading ankle specialists in the country, and the winger is now following a non-surgical treatment plan.

Johnston rejoined Albion from Celtic in August 2024 after a successful four-month loan spell at The Hawthorns. Across his time with the club, he has made 99 appearances in all competitions – and now faces a frustrating wait before he can add to that total.
