Mohamed Salah Steadies Trabzonspor After Europa League Exit
Mohamed Salah has moved quickly to steady the ship at Trabzonspor after a brutal Europa League exit and a dramatic, short-lived resignation from his manager.
The 34-year-old forward, who left Liverpool in the summer to begin a new chapter in Turkey, watched his new side crumble 4-0 to Ferencvaros on Thursday night. He lasted 64 minutes before being substituted, unable to prevent a heavy defeat that dumped Trabzonspor out of the Europa League and into the Conference League.
The result sent shockwaves through the club.
Managerial Resignation
Head coach Fatih Tekke walked into his post-match press conference and stunned reporters by announcing he was stepping down. “I think I have the right to punish myself in this way,” he said, laying the blame squarely at his own feet.
The board refused to let him go.
In a swift and pointed response, Trabzonspor released a statement confirming Tekke’s resignation had been rejected: “Fatih Tekke has decided to resign due to the emotional intensity caused by the defeat following the Ferencvaros match. Salah's Defiant Message
The Egyptian took to X with a defiant message, making it clear he has no intention of shrinking from the challenge or treating Trabzonspor as a short stop at the end of a glittering career.
“Nothing in my career ever came easy,” he wrote. “Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies.
“Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. Last night will not change that. I know expectations are high, and I truly believe we can and will deliver. ‘I came here to win’ is not just a slogan to me.”
It was a rallying cry aimed at supporters, team-mates and, perhaps, himself after a sobering European night.
Salah arrived in Trabzon after agreeing to terminate his Liverpool contract at the end of last season, ending a storied spell at Anfield. Following the World Cup, Trabzonspor won the race for his signature, unveiling him to huge fanfare and expectation.
He signed a two-year deal and spoke openly about the impact of the welcome he received.
“The last couple of days, it's an experience I have never had in my life,” he said at the time. “I'm here to win. I want to win something with this club because you guys have showed me so much love, and I really, really appreciate that.”
Those words now hang over the early weeks of his Turkish adventure. A heavy European defeat, a manager trying to resign, a fanbase demanding a response.
