Moisés Caicedo's Absence Hurts Chelsea Against Arsenal
Moisés Caicedo was nowhere to be seen on the Chelsea team sheet for their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday, Sept. 6, a significant setback for Xabi Alonso just as it looked like the midfielder was edging back to full fitness.
The Ecuador international had already endured a stop-start opening to the campaign. He was a surprise absentee from Chelsea’s league opener against Fulham, with Alonso revealing afterward that Caicedo had suffered what he called a “minor setback.”
That knock kept him out of the midweek Carabao Cup win over Luton Town as well, delaying his return to the heart of Chelsea’s midfield. He finally made it back onto the pitch against Brighton last weekend, but even that came with a warning sign.
Caicedo was introduced as a second-half substitute against the Seagulls and lasted only 14 minutes before he had to come off again. Alonso admitted the problem that forced him out “wasn’t something new,” hinting at an issue that had lingered rather than a fresh injury blow.
So attention turned to Arsenal. A marquee fixture, a high-intensity midfield battle, and a stage seemingly made for a player of Caicedo’s profile. He pushed to be involved. Chelsea’s medical staff worked to get him there.
He fell just short.
According to Alonso, Caicedo came close to making the squad but was ultimately ruled out on the day of the game. The manager made it clear he was not willing to gamble.
“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” Alonso told Sky Sports before kick-off against the Gunners.
For Chelsea, it means going into one of their toughest early-season tests without a key piece of their midfield structure. For Caicedo, it is another frustrating pause in a season that has yet to find its rhythm.
The club now faces a simple question with a complicated answer: how long can they hold their nerve with caution, when the demands of the Premier League keep rising every week?
