Moratti’s €500m Gamble: The Messi Bid That Never Happened
Massimo Moratti tried to do the unthinkable in 2012. He went after Lionel Messi with an offer that sounded more like fantasy than football business: 500 million euros.
The former Inter president, speaking to Catalan newspaper Sport, revealed that he sent Inter’s vice-president to Barcelona armed with the staggering proposal, hoping to prise the Argentine away from the Camp Nou at the peak of his powers.
It never even became a negotiation.
“I did something crazy in 2012, I made Messi an offer worth 500 million euros,” Moratti recalled. “In that year, this figure was crazy, and I sent Inter's vice-president to Barcelona to negotiate, but Messi did not even open the letter, and did not know the value of the offer. He rejected it without knowing the details.”
The numbers were outrageous, even by modern standards. But Messi’s answer cut through all that.
When the two finally spoke, the Argentine made his stance crystal clear: “I appreciate your interest in me, but I want to retire at Barcelona.”
Moratti had always known where Messi’s heart lay. The Inter chief still tried to test that loyalty with money, sending that enormous bid into the lion’s den of Barcelona’s dressing room. Messi didn’t flinch. He simply refused to be moved from the idea of spending his career in the blaugrana shirt.
Football, of course, had other plans.
Barcelona’s financial collapse forced Messi out in 2021. He left not for Milan, but for Paris, joining Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after the club failed to renew his contract. From there, he crossed the Atlantic to Inter Miami, trading the Camp Nou for MLS and closing the door on his long-held dream of retiring as a Barcelona player.
What never changed was what he left behind in Catalonia.
Messi spent the bulk of his career at Barcelona and became the greatest player in the club’s history, the axis around which an era revolved. He drove the team to a haul of trophies that reshaped European football. Among them, the 2015 Champions League stands out, won as part of that devastating attacking trident with Luis Suarez and Neymar.
Moratti’s €500m bid is now a story from another time, a wild what-if in the age of superclubs and superstars. Messi’s answer, though, still echoes: some players can be bought, some can’t.
