Mourinho's Advice to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep one of their crown jewels out of the Premier League’s reach.
The Brazilian forward was heading into the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu, a situation that had Arsenal watching closely, ready to pounce on a rare opportunity to sign one of the world’s elite wingers on a free next summer.
Instead, Vinicius stayed. Earlier this month, he signed a new six-year deal and tied his prime years to Madrid.
According to Mourinho, it came down to a simple warning.
Mourinho’s message: “Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.”
Back at Real Madrid for a second spell, the 63-year-old Portuguese coach spoke on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito about his role in convincing the 26-year-old to commit.
“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said, before lifting the lid on the conversation that helped shape the decision.
“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”
For Mourinho, it wasn’t just about sentiment. It was about what the player felt inside the dressing room.
“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added.
The message landed. Arsenal’s interest faded into the background as Vinicius chose continuity in Madrid over a fresh challenge in England.
From Champions League rivals to allies
Mourinho’s relationship with Vinicius has not always been on the same side of the touchline. Last season, he faced Real Madrid three times in the Champions League while in charge of Benfica.
Their second meeting, the first leg of a knockout phase play-off, was marred by controversy. Real players alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni had racially abused Vinicius, prompting an eight-minute stoppage as tensions rose on the pitch.
Prestianni denied the accusations. Mourinho, in that moment, publicly backed his own player.
Uefa later intervened, banning Prestianni for three matches, with another three suspended, for homophobic conduct.
Now, with Mourinho in the Real Madrid dugout, he insists Vinicius knows exactly where he stands.
“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” Mourinho said, explaining his stance at the time.
The dynamic has changed. The loyalty, he argues, now runs in Vinicius’ direction.
“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side.”
Real Madrid have their winger locked in for six more years. Mourinho has his star attacker on board. The rest of Europe, Arsenal included, will have to look elsewhere.
