Mourinho’s Interest in Cucurella for Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has not taken his first training session at Real Madrid yet, but the squad is already under the microscope. The Portuguese coach, never one to drift into a new job gently, is said to be drawing up his first list of adjustments. High on it: the left side of his defence.
And that is where Marc Cucurella comes in.
Mourinho’s eye on Cucurella
According to journalist Ruben Canizares, Mourinho is closely tracking the Chelsea full-back, whose future at Stamford Bridge looks increasingly fragile ahead of the summer window. Cucurella, 25, is understood to be open to a new challenge, and those around him believe this is the right moment to move.
His entourage consider a transfer fee in the region of €45–50 million to be realistic. Anything substantially higher, they reportedly view as out of the question.
That valuation has been enough to draw serious glances from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Real Madrid are among them. Barcelona are too.
Barcelona lurking, but constrained
Cucurella’s name has resurfaced in Catalonia, where Barcelona are once again monitoring his situation. The interest is genuine, but the familiar problem remains: money.
As with so many of their recent windows, Barça’s ability to act depends heavily on outgoings and room within their financial structure. They like the player. They are following the file. But they cannot move freely until other pieces fall into place.
That leaves the door open for Madrid, though their own situation at left-back is not exactly straightforward.
Madrid have options – Mourinho wants more
On paper, Real Madrid are already well stocked on the left side of defence, with three options available in the current squad. On the touchline, though, the picture looks different.
Mourinho is not fully convinced by Alvaro Carreras, who arrived last summer with high expectations but has not yet locked down the position. The defender remains part of the plans, yet the incoming coach clearly sees an opportunity – and a need – to raise the level.
Cucurella, with his Premier League experience, intensity and versatility, fits the profile of a ready-made competitor. For Mourinho, it is the kind of signing that tightens margins in big games, the sort of detail he obsesses over.
But the move is anything but simple.
A tactical upgrade – at a price
If Mourinho pushes ahead, Madrid will first need to clear space. Carrying three left-backs and adding a fourth is not sustainable at elite level, particularly for a club that also has other areas to strengthen this summer.
That is the crux of the debate inside the Bernabéu: does reinforcing left-back justify a €45–50 million outlay when the squad may require investment elsewhere?
Cucurella’s camp are convinced that is the correct bracket for negotiations. Madrid must decide whether the combination of price, profile and positional need lines up with their broader plan for the Mourinho era.
The coach has made his stance clear simply by circling the position in red. Whether the club match that urgency with a bold move for Cucurella will say plenty about how aggressively they intend to back him from day one.
