Mourinho's Warning to Asencio: Real Madrid Obligation 24/7
José Mourinho has delivered a stark reminder of what it means to wear the Real Madrid badge, using Raúl Asencio’s latest off-field incident to underline that being a Madrid player is, in his words, a “24-hour a day” obligation.
The warning came after Gran Canaria's High Court of Justice confirmed on Wednesday that Asencio had been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in August.
The 23-year-old defender, a Madrid player since his youth-team days in 2017, was stopped at a police checkpoint in Gran Canaria on August 16 and returned a breathalyzer reading four times over the legal limit. The punishment was heavy: a €14,400 ($16,700) fine and an eight-month suspension of his driving licence.
Asencio has not played for Madrid this season due to injury, but his absence from the pitch has not kept him out of the spotlight.
Mourinho Draws a Line
Speaking ahead of Madrid’s trip to Real Betis on Friday, Mourinho did not hide his frustration. Asked about Asencio’s future, he balanced praise for the defender’s work on the training ground with a blunt assessment of his behaviour away from it.
“I spoke with him when I arrived,” Mourinho said. “I spoke with him about things from the past. Since I arrived ... I haven’t spoken to him since.
“At Valdebebas, I’d say he’s an exemplary professional. When he was fit, nobody trained harder or better than him. Now that he’s been injured for weeks, he’s the first to arrive and the last to leave. He’s extremely dedicated to his recovery.
“But a Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. Seven days a week. And 12 months a year. Everything you do outside your professional life is still Real Madrid. It continues to damage the prestige of a club that is untouchable. That can’t be touched. And with that, I’m practically saying that ... I’m not happy.
“We all make mistakes. But accumulated mistakes ... That’s a different story."
The phrase “accumulated mistakes” hung in the air. Mourinho knew exactly what he was referring to, and so did everyone else in the room.
Pressed again on the issue, he confirmed that the club has “opened an investigation” into the matter, signalling that this will not be swept quietly under the carpet.
Legal Storms and Lingering Doubts
Asencio’s drink-driving conviction is only the latest controversy to engulf his career.
On Thursday, a Spanish court acquitted the defender of charges related to the distribution of sexual images of a woman and a minor without their consent. The case had cast a long shadow over both player and club. Three of his former Real Madrid youth teammates — Andrés García, Ferrán Ruiz and Juan Rodríguez — accepted a one-year suspended jail sentence for distributing child pornography.
Asencio walked away without a conviction in that case, but Mourinho’s “accumulated mistakes” line made clear that acquittal in court does not automatically translate to a clean slate in the dressing room.
With the legal cloud finally lifting, the football question now lands squarely on Mourinho’s desk: does Asencio still have a future in this squad?
On the pitch, the competition is fierce and unforgiving. Dean Huijsen has nailed down a regular spot in Mourinho’s back four in the early weeks of the season. Antonio Rüdiger and Ibrahima Konaté have shared the other central defensive role, offering experience, physicality and reliability.
Éder Militão is still to return, adding another heavyweight name to the mix. Behind them, 19-year-old Mario Rivas impressed in preseason and has given the coaching staff a glimpse of a possible long-term option.
