Neuer Critiques Bayern’s Lack of Ruthlessness After Champions League Exit
Manuel Neuer cut a frustrated figure at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, as Bayern Munich slipped out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage and their captain pointed the finger squarely at his own side’s lack of ruthlessness.
Vincent Kompany’s team drew 1-1 with the French Ligue 1 champions in the second leg in Munich, Ousmane Dembele and Harry Kane trading goals in a tense contest. It wasn’t enough. Luis Enrique’s side advanced 6-5 on aggregate, leaving Bayern to stare at what might have been.
In the mixed zone afterwards, Neuer did not hide his disappointment or his assessment of where it went wrong.
“We didn’t have that killer instinct in attack tonight,” the goalkeeper admitted, a blunt verdict on a night when Bayern chased the game but never quite grabbed it by the throat.
They had spells of pressure. They had territory. They had moments when the Allianz felt ready to explode. But they never turned those surges into the decisive blows that define Champions League semi-finals.
“We may not have had that many clear-cut chances, but we certainly had the opportunity to win the match. We were close to the final but couldn’t get over the line,” Neuer said.
That was the story of the tie in miniature: close, but not enough. Bayern’s goal, when it finally arrived, came too late to tilt the balance of a breathless two-legged battle that had already swung towards the French champions.
“If we’d had a key moment and scored the goal, it’s a different story. Unfortunately, our goal came a bit too late,” Neuer added, summing up a night when Bayern’s timing deserted them at the sharp end of the pitch.
The aggregate scoreline will show a one-goal margin. Neuer’s words suggested it will feel far bigger inside the Bayern dressing room.
