Newcastle Targets Guille Fernández from Barcelona’s La Masia
Newcastle’s youth drive shows no sign of slowing, and Barcelona’s La Masia is the latest talent pool in their sights.

Sean Steur, 18, is in. So is 20-year-old Aladji Bamba. Both are midfielders. Both are part of a clear pattern. Reports on Wednesday then linked Newcastle with another teenager, 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate, with a deal said to be close.
Now, attention has swung to Catalonia.
La Masia’s next export?
According to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, Newcastle are closing in on Guille Fernández, an 18-year-old midfielder from Barcelona’s famed academy.
“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” Fernández reported. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”
Guille Fernández has yet to make his senior debut for Barcelona, but he has climbed steadily through La Masia and established himself with the club’s reserve side. He already has Spain Under-19 caps and can operate across multiple central midfield roles, adding to his appeal for a Newcastle squad being reshaped with versatility in mind.
Heading into the 2027-28 season, his market value stands at around €3 million. He is currently listed on Barcelona’s first-team roster, but the pathway to regular minutes in Xavi’s senior setup is steep, and that has opened the door for a move.
Barcelona, though, are not planning to cut the cord completely.
Fernández’s report makes it clear the Catalan club want to retain some control over Guille’s long-term future. Any agreement is expected to include a buy-back mechanism rather than a clean break, a familiar structure for La Masia exports. No specific transfer fee or buy-back figure has been disclosed, and with Fernández also noting competition for the player, the final price could climb if a bidding war develops.
Newcastle’s two-track rebuild
For Newcastle, the message is consistent: stack the academy and development ranks with high-upside talent while hunting a ready-made midfielder for the here and now.
The suggestion that Guille is “close to Newcastle” points to another piece being added to an increasingly youth-driven rebuild. At the same time, the club is working on a deal at the opposite end of the spectrum, targeting a more experienced midfielder capable of immediately absorbing some of the quality lost with Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
One name on that list is Man City’s Nico Gonzalez, himself a La Masia product. That pursuit underlines the dual approach: prospects like Guille Fernández for the future, established operators like Gonzalez for the present.
Newcastle have chosen their path. The only real question is how far they’re willing to go down it before the window slams shut.
