Newcastle Firm on Tonali's Future Amid Premier League Interest

Newcastle United have drawn a thick line through Sandro Tonali’s name on the “for sale” list. Interested? It starts at £100 million – and that’s just to get them to the table.

Tottenham Hotspur are the latest club to test the water, with sources confirming Roberto De Zerbi’s side have formally registered their interest in the 26-year-old midfielder. They join a growing queue of admirers, but Newcastle’s stance is blunt: unless an offer comfortably breaks nine figures, there will be no conversation.

Inside St James’ Park, the message is clear. Tonali is regarded as one of the club’s most influential players, a cornerstone of their long-term project, and the hierarchy are determined not to be bounced into a sale. That resolve comes even as the player’s camp pushes in the opposite direction.

Tonali’s representatives have informed Newcastle that the Italy international is keen to move on, with a return to Serie A understood to be his preferred route if he leaves Tyneside. Former club AC Milan are watching closely. The Rossoneri are close to installing Ruben Amorim as head coach and Markus Krosche as sporting director, and Tonali remains a name admired at San Siro.

There is also a belief Milan could get creative. Financial arrangements still linked to the transfers of Tonali and Malick Thiaw between the clubs could, in theory, help structure a deal. What remains unknown is whether Krosche, once officially in the building, will choose to make his former player a priority. If he doesn’t, the door swings wider for a move elsewhere.

Inter Milan and Juventus also like what they see, but both face the same hard reality: Newcastle’s valuation is a major obstacle. At present, a Premier League destination looks more realistic than a romantic return to Italy.

Manchester United have already stepped back after exploring the situation, effectively ruling themselves out over the asking price. Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea have all held conversations about the midfielder and continue to monitor developments, aware that any softening in Newcastle’s position could trigger a scramble.

Now comes Tottenham. De Zerbi, a long-standing admirer of his compatriot, would welcome the chance to build his midfield around Tonali in north London if the opportunity arises. Those close to the player sense that if he does stay in England, a move to the capital – and specifically London – is emerging as the most plausible outcome.

The pressure around Tonali is rising, but Newcastle are not blinking.

The club are determined not to repeat missteps from previous windows, with the Alexander Isak saga cited internally as a cautionary tale. That episode, which left Newcastle scrambling and weakened their hand in negotiations, has shaped a tougher approach this summer.

Sporting director Ross Wilson, who was not involved back then, has become central to this firmer line. Sources insist Newcastle have set clear positions on their key assets and will not allow drawn-out transfer sagas to erode their leverage. The policy stretches beyond Tonali.

Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Nick Woltemade have all attracted external interest, yet the message from the boardroom has barely changed: if Newcastle decide a player is not for sale, no volume of calls or headlines will wear them down.

Tonali’s camp may be sounding out options. Europe’s elite may be circling. But Newcastle’s stance remains unequivocal. Any club hoping to prise away one of the Premier League’s most accomplished midfielders must arrive with an offer that smashes through the £100m mark before the Magpies even think about opening the door.

There is, though, one major name they will listen to offers for. Nick Pope is available at a modest price, with Newcastle prepared to sanction a move for the goalkeeper. A switch to Leeds United is considered unlikely, but two Premier League clubs are in the mix for his signature.

So Tonali is boxed in for now: a player who wants movement, a club that wants to build around him, and a market that will have to decide whether he is truly worth nine figures. Someone will blink. The only question is who.
