Newcastle United Eye Geny Catamo as January Target
Newcastle United are already looking beyond a quiet, youth-focused summer and into a January window that could ask far tougher questions of their ambition – and their budget. One name has moved sharply up the watchlist: Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo.
The 25-year-old Mozambique international has drawn a cluster of Premier League scouts to Lisbon, with Newcastle among those stepping up their checks in recent weeks, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey. Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have also taken a close look, while Aston Villa are still tracking him after monitoring his situation over the summer.
Catamo has done his part to fuel the interest. He has opened the season brightly for Sporting, producing two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances and showing the kind of end product that tends to trigger phone calls from England.
Newcastle know this isn’t a fresh opportunity suddenly appearing from nowhere. Bailey reports that several clubs – including those now circling – made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have simply kept the file open, watching his progress as the new campaign began. The real stumbling block is not the player’s form, or even his willingness to move. It is Sporting’s stance.
Sunderland discovered that the hard way. The Black Cats made Catamo a primary attacking target in the last window but hit a brick wall in negotiations. Sporting refused to entertain a deal and pointed every suitor to the same line in the contract: a €60 million (£51 million) release clause. If anyone wanted the winger, they would have to pay it in full. Sunderland walked away.
Their interest has not vanished, but the landscape has changed. Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa now represent heavyweight Premier League competition, all hovering around a player who appears ready for the step. One factor tilting the situation slightly towards England’s top flight is Catamo himself.
Bailey reports that Catamo is “more than open” to a Premier League move and attracted by the idea of testing himself in English football. That appetite will not lower his price, but it does make any serious offer from England a compelling proposition for the player.
For now, there is no sign that Newcastle have tabled a bid or opened formal talks with Sporting. The entire race may hinge on a single question: will Sporting soften their €60 million position in January, or will they hold the line again and dare someone to trigger the clause?
If the answer is no movement from Lisbon, Newcastle face a decision that cuts to the heart of their recruitment strategy. Is Catamo a £51 million solution worth bending for, or a talent they admire but ultimately leave on the shelf while they hunt better value elsewhere?
