Newcastle United Pursues Nico Gonzalez as Man City Opens Sale Talks
Newcastle United’s bid to prise Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City has moved into its most promising phase yet, with the Premier League champions now prepared to sanction his exit.
The chase, first flagged by The Athletic’s David Ornstein on Tuesday when Newcastle opened talks for the midfielder, has accelerated quickly. Fabrizio Romano then underlined that City were “quite open” to doing business, even while Gonzalez himself still leaned towards staying and fighting for his place at the Etihad.
That personal stance was the main roadblock. Not anymore.
City open the door
Romano’s line was clear: City, despite being light in midfield, were not shutting the door on a sale if the proposal was right. Now, according to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, that door has been pushed wide open.
“Man City have told Nico Gonzalez he can leave and talks with Newcastle continue,” Hope reported, adding that the 24-year-old is open to the move, even as some team-mates try to convince him to stay. Among the midfielders Newcastle are tracking, Gonzalez is described as the leading target.
It marks a sharp turn from earlier this month. Then, Gonzalez was publicly adamant.
“I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay,” he said. “I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard.”
That was the message when he still believed he could carve out a significant role under the new regime. The landscape has changed.
Maresca’s message
New City manager Enzo Maresca has been blunt about players who struggled for minutes last season, a group that includes Gonzalez.
“Aside from Rodri, they all have in common one thing: they didn’t play a lot,” Maresca said when asked about several potential departures. “When they don’t play, probably they prefer to leave.”
The implication is obvious. Gonzalez is no longer being protected as an untouchable piece of City’s future. If he wants regular football, it likely lies elsewhere.
For Newcastle, that shift removes two major obstacles at once. City’s willingness to sell should make negotiations less combative and keep the fee within reach. At the same time, a player who recently insisted he was staying in Manchester now has every reason to listen when St James’ Park calls.
Newcastle’s midfield rebuild
The deal is not done. No agreement between the clubs has been reported, and Newcastle continue to work through other midfield options in case either Gonzalez or City reverse course.
But if they get it over the line, Gonzalez would walk straight into Matthias Jaissle’s plans.
With Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali gone, Jaissle is rebuilding the heart of his side. Newcastle have already brought in youngsters Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, signings for the future rather than guaranteed starters. Gonzalez, by contrast, would arrive with the pedigree and top-level experience to anchor the midfield from day one.
For a club trying to retool without losing competitiveness, that matters. This isn’t a developmental punt. It’s a statement signing if they can close it.
Newcastle have opened the door. City have finally stepped aside. The next move belongs to Gonzalez – does he seize the chance to become the centrepiece at St James’ Park, or cling to the shadows of the Etihad bench?
