Newcastle United vs RB Leipzig: The Christopher Nkunku Transfer Saga
Newcastle United are still in the fight for Christopher Nkunku – but they are swimming against the tide of the player’s wishes.
The 28-year-old forward is on his way out of AC Milan before the transfer deadline, effectively frozen out after being left without a squad number. Two clubs have stepped up: Newcastle and RB Leipzig. One has the money. The other has the player’s heart.
Player wants Leipzig, Milan wait for Newcastle
On Friday, Fabrizio Romano revealed that both Newcastle and Leipzig had made direct contact with Milan over a deal. At that stage, a return to Leipzig looked almost inevitable.
Since then, the picture has twisted.
According to TuttoMercato journalist Daniel Najjar, Nkunku has already reached an agreement with Leipzig and told Milan that going back to his former club is his clear preference. Leipzig is where he built his name, where he knows the league, the club, the environment. His choice is obvious.
Milan, though, hold the contract and the leverage. And they are in no rush to simply nod along.
Najjar reports that Milan are deliberately stalling, convinced Newcastle can put more money on the table in terms of loan fee and overall terms. The message from his report is blunt: “Milan continues to wait for Newcastle… The player currently absolutely wants to go to Leipzig.”
So the player is pulling in one direction. The selling club is staring at the other.
Money on the table
This marks a shift from where things stood at the end of last week, when a Leipzig reunion appeared almost nailed on.
Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo has reported that Newcastle actually submitted the strongest financial proposal to Milan. Yet Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has indicated Leipzig still hold the edge because they offer something money cannot buy: greater appeal to Nkunku himself.
That tension now defines the entire deal.
Milan are not blocking the move out of sentiment. The financial structure is key. TuttoMercato’s Nicholas Righi reports that Milan and Leipzig are working on a loan with an option to buy, a package that could climb to around €33–35 million (£28.5–30 million).
Newcastle, by contrast, are said to be ready with a straight permanent transfer worth roughly €35 million (£30 million). Clean, simple, and more lucrative up front.
From Milan’s perspective, the choice is obvious. From Nkunku’s, it is just as clear – in the opposite direction.
Pull of the past
Nkunku’s stance is easy to understand. Between 2019 and 2023 at RB Leipzig, he delivered 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 appearances, collecting individual honours and establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s standout attacking talents.
Leipzig is not just another option. It is his reference point, his platform, the club that turned him into a star.
Newcastle can offer the Premier League, a project with ambition, and a bigger fee for Milan. Leipzig can offer familiarity and emotional pull for the player. Milan are ready to cash in where the numbers are strongest. Nkunku, at least for now, is not.
So the question hangs over Tyneside: do Newcastle push harder to outmuscle Leipzig financially for a player whose heart is already in Germany, or do they walk away and find someone who actually wants St James’ Park to be home?
