Nico Elvedi's Exciting Move to Leeds United
Nico Elvedi is already picturing it. The walk through the Elland Road tunnel, the noise rising, the first glimpse of the Leeds United support. For the club’s new centre-back, that is the moment everything becomes real.
“It is a special moment,” he said, already sounding a little swept up by the idea. “I am very happy to be here, everything is done and I can't wait to play for this club. It is such a big club with amazing fans and I also can't wait to play in this stadium with the fans.”
Elvedi arrives from Borussia Mönchengladbach at 29, a seasoned defender with Bundesliga miles in his legs and World Cup experience behind him. The move did not come out of nowhere. During the 2026 World Cup, he leaned on a trusted voice: Switzerland team-mate Noah Okafor.
Okafor, he explained, sold him on Leeds.
The forward “told him many good things about the club” during their time together with the national team, and the more Elvedi listened, the more the idea grew. By the time Leeds came calling, he already liked what he heard.
He has done his homework too. The Swiss defender has been watching Elland Road from afar, studying clips, trying to feel the place before he sets foot on it.
“I saw some videos from the stadium, from the fans, and I love it,” he said. “Everybody told me it is a special moment to go through the tunnel and see the atmosphere. I can't wait to see that.”
If the emotion belongs to Elvedi, the scouting report comes from Germany. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, German football reporter Christian Hornung painted the picture of a defender who knows exactly what he is.
“He is reliable,” Hornung said. “Tough in one-v-one situations. He has a really good tackle and is good at heading. He isn't a magician on the pitch but he does what he can.”
No frills. No fuss. Just a defender who defends.
“If you pick Nico Elvedi then you know what you get,” Hornung added. “And I think he's a really fantastic player. It's a really good deal for Leeds.”
Leeds are banking on exactly that: dependability at the back, personality in the tunnel, and a player who already understands the weight of that first roar at Elland Road.
