Noah Okafor Ends Switzerland Career Under Murat Yakin

Noah Okafor has drawn a hard line under his Switzerland career – at least for as long as Murat Yakin remains in charge.

The Leeds United forward announced on Thursday that he will no longer represent the national team under the current head coach, saying trust between the pair has collapsed.

Okafor, 26, has collected 26 caps since his debut in 2019, but his role at the recent World Cup was reduced to a cameo. He played just 19 minutes, coming off the bench in Switzerland’s last-32 win over Algeria.

The decision, he insists, is not about minutes on the pitch.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Okafor wrote that his choice was rooted in how he feels he has been treated by the current regime. "My decision has nothing to do with my playing time," he said. "Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept."

He pointed to his brief outing against Algeria as a flashpoint, describing the reaction to his performance as deeply wounding.

"When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply," he wrote. "In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager."

The Swiss FA confirmed it had been informed of Okafor’s stance on Thursday. A spokesperson told Reuters: "We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club."

For Switzerland, the timing is awkward. Their next assignment comes on 26 September, an away trip to North Macedonia to open their 2026-27 Nations League campaign, and they will go into it without a forward who, at 26, should be entering his prime years at international level.

Okafor’s club career, though, is moving in the opposite direction. He joined Leeds from AC Milan in August 2025 for £18m, a statement signing for a club pushing to re-establish itself at the sharp end of English football.

Yakin, who has led Switzerland since August 2021, now faces a different kind of selection problem – not who to pick, but how many players still feel the bond of trust is strong enough to follow him into the next cycle.
