Orlando Pirates Set to Lose Star Patrick Maswanganyi to Asian Club
Orlando Pirates are understood to be on the verge of cashing in on another of their title-winning stars, with talks for Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi’s move to an unnamed Asian Football Confederation club believed to be all but wrapped up.
The 28-year-old playmaker is expected to start a new chapter abroad after three hugely influential seasons in Soweto, where he helped drag the Buccaneers back to the summit of South African football.
Ominous Omission Raises Eyebrows
The first real sign that something bigger was brewing came at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Pirates edged Sekhukhune United 1–0 in the first leg of their semifinal, thanks to a strike from evergreen winger Deon Hotto, but Maswanganyi was nowhere to be seen. After the game, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made it clear the omission had nothing to do with injury, sharpening the focus on the midfielder’s future and effectively confirming that this was not a routine rotation call.
From that moment, the writing on the wall grew bolder.
From Instant Hit to Title Catalyst
Pirates snapped up Maswanganyi from SuperSport United in 2023. He did not need a settling-in period. He lit up Orlando from the start, quickly becoming a fan favourite and a central figure in a side desperate to end a long domestic drought.
Last season, he helped steer the club to their first league title since 2012, finally unseating Mamelodi Sundowns and shifting the balance of power in the Premiership. His creativity and work rate knitted Pirates’ attack together, and his performances underlined why the club had moved so decisively to get him.
That impact made the current situation feel unlikely just a few months ago.
Another Key Piece Set to Go
It already seemed as though Pirates had taken their major hit in the market when they sanctioned the sale of talisman Relebohile Mofokeng, the reigning Footballer of the Year, to Belgian top-flight side Union Saint-Gilloise shortly after the FIFA World Cup.
Losing Mofokeng was supposed to be the big sacrifice.
Yet the exodus has continued. The club have confirmed the departure of right-back Deano van Rooyen after two years in black and white, and now Maswanganyi appears next in line, despite having featured in every fixture leading up to the trip to Polokwane to face Sekhukhune.
The squad that ripped the title away from Sundowns is being reshaped at speed.
No Stranger to Foreign Shores
If the deal is completed, Maswanganyi will not be stepping into the unknown.
As a teenager, he left the renowned Stars of Africa Academy for Portugal, spending several formative years in Europe and learning to live and play away from home long before his breakthrough at Pirates. That experience should soften the transition into the AFC, even if the destination club remains under wraps for now.
On the international stage, “Tito” owns four Bafana Bafana caps. His trajectory, though, has not been straightforward. He missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the start of the year and then the World Cup, slipping down the national-team pecking order at precisely the time his club form was peaking.
Now, with Pirates on the brink of losing another cornerstone of their revival, the question is no longer whether Maswanganyi is ready for the move.
It’s how quickly the champions can rebuild around the space he leaves behind.
