Palmeiras Dominate Santos in Copa do Brasil First Leg
Palmeiras did not just beat Santos. They smothered them.
With Neymar watching from the sidelines, the hosts tore into their rivals on Wednesday night, cruising to a 3-0 first-leg win in the Copa do Brasil and leaving Santos clinging to faint hope ahead of the return at Vila Belmiro.
Lopez lights the fuse
The tone was set early. Palmeiras snapped into tackles, squeezed high, and forced Santos back towards their own box. The visitors, missing their No. 10 and with Gabigol held in reserve, never settled.

Just when Santos thought they might escape to half-time with minimal damage, the night got worse.
Pereira strikes before the break
On the stroke of the interval, Palmeiras pounced again. A shot spilled loose in the box, and Andreas Pereira reacted first, slamming the rebound home. Clinical. Ruthless. Exactly what Santos lacked at the other end.
At 2-0, the scoreline already reflected the gulf in sharpness. Palmeiras were faster to second balls, smarter in their movement, and far more decisive in the final third. Santos, by contrast, looked like a side carrying heavy legs and a heavier burden of expectation.
Off the pitch, Neymar moved quickly to quash the inevitable noise. The forward, initially named in the preliminary travelling group but omitted from the matchday squad, told supporters directly on Instagram that he was fit and that the decision had come from the coaching staff, citing the intense run of games.
“I was available to play! It was a decision by the coaching staff, due to the sequence of games we have,” he wrote, cutting through any speculation about injury.
Santos blunt, Palmeiras relentless
That “sequence of games” has been brutal. Neymar had played the full 90 minutes in three straight matches against Macara, Vasco da Gama, and Mirassol. Cuca and his staff chose rotation. The pitch showed the cost.
Without their No. 10 from the start and with Gabigol only introduced after the break, Santos offered almost nothing in the final third. The Verdao backline stood firm, reading every predictable move, stepping in before attacks could develop. There were no late runs from deep, no surprise angles, no chaos to unsettle a defence that looked entirely in control.
The pressure finally told again in the second half.
Agustin Giay, already influential down the flank, delivered a teasing ball into the box. Lopez attacked it with conviction, glancing a sharp header into the net to make it 3-0 and effectively kill the tie as a contest on the night. A brace for the forward, and a commanding cushion for Palmeiras.
It could have been even more brutal.
With Santos stretched and chasing shadows, Giay and Mauricio each found themselves clean through on goal. Both times, they failed to convert their one-on-one chances, letting Santos off the hook and keeping the scoreline just about respectable. The performance, though, told a harsher story than the numbers on the board.
A brutal schedule, a brutal scoreline
Santos now face a punishing stretch with confidence shaken. The calendar offers no sympathy.
First comes a high-stakes away derby against Corinthians in the Campeonato Brasileiro this weekend, a fixture that rarely allows for hesitation or fragility. Then, back to cup duty and the monumental task of overturning a three-goal deficit against the same Palmeiras side that just dismantled them, this time at Vila Belmiro. After that, a trip to Internacional.
For Cuca, the equation is stark. Rotation has bought Neymar a breather. Now he needs his star fully recharged.
Neymar’s return to the starting line-up is no longer just desirable; it feels essential if Santos are to rediscover any attacking edge and keep their Copa do Brasil campaign alive. The question is not whether he will start the second leg.
It is whether even he can drag this tie back from the brink.
