Premier League 2026/27 Matchweek 1 Team News: Injury Updates and Line-Ups
With the 2026/27 Premier League season finally here, managers, players and millions of Fantasy Premier League coaches are all doing the same thing: sweating over line-ups before tonight’s 18:30 BST deadline.
A frantic summer has redrawn squads across the division. Now comes the first reveal. Here’s how Matchweek 1 is shaping up.
Arsenal v Coventry: Arteta waits on Guimaraes
Mikel Arteta heads into the opener juggling fitness calls and expectation. New signing Bruno Guimaraes is a major doubt, though the Arsenal manager is determined to give his midfielder every possible minute.
“Let’s see how it is. He is evolving really well,” Arteta said, confirming a late decision.
Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, benched for the Community Shield win over Manchester City, are “ready to be involved” and should return to the starting XI. Jurrien Timber remains “a few weeks” away, while William Saliba is still a long-term absentee, leaving the back line short of its ideal shape.
Coventry arrive with a significant hole in attack. Last season’s top scorer Haji Wright has been ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a serious quad injury.
“He won’t be available for a little while, he’s got a very serious quad injury which is disappointing for Haji and for us,” Frank Lampard admitted. Ellis Simms is expected to step in up front.
Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni have shaken off pre-season issues and are in contention, but Lampard is unlikely to risk them from the start. Frank Onyeka faces a late fitness test as Coventry try to piece together a competitive XI for a daunting trip.
Hull v Man Utd: patched-up hosts, selection puzzles for Carrick
Hull begin the campaign already stretched. Six first-team players, including Jack Butland and Darko Gyabi, are sidelined until at least next month. Joe Gelhardt’s absence adds another problem in attack.
Hidemasa Morita is only due back in training after the Manchester United game, with Cody Drameh likely to follow a similar schedule. At centre-back, the loss of Charlie Hughes leaves a sizeable gap, so new signing Nobel Mendy is poised to step in.
Given the injuries, Hull are expected to lean again on the compact five-at-the-back system that carried them through the playoffs, aiming to suffocate space and frustrate United.
On the other side, Michael Carrick has a strong pre-season behind him but a few key question marks. Mason Mount is “touch and go for the weekend”, though Carrick stressed “there are no dramas” and that the midfielder’s absence, if it comes, will not be long-term.
Matthijs De Ligt is back in training but not yet ready to feature. Benjamin Sesko has rejoined the squad too, yet this opener is likely to come too soon for him to start. That leaves Carrick with decisions to make in attack, balancing sharpness and rhythm with early-season caution.
Everton v Crystal Palace: Henderson race against time
Everton’s team news remains under wraps for now, heightening the intrigue around their first XI of the season.
Crystal Palace, under new manager Pierre Sage, have clearer contours. The main concern is in goal. Dean Henderson twisted his ankle in the final pre-season friendly against Freiburg, but the club are optimistic.
“We want him to play,” Sage said. “But we gave him a few days of treatment to allow him to be in his best shape.”
The rest of the squad is available, including Jean-Philippe Mateta. The forward is still building fitness and is unlikely to start, but he will be in the matchday squad and could be used from the bench as Palace look for a late impact.
Ipswich v Sunderland: Le Bris spoilt for choice
Ipswich are yet to reveal their team news, leaving Fantasy managers guessing.
Sunderland, though, travel with almost a full deck. Only Simon Adingra misses out, still not fully recovered from an ankle problem. Regis Le Bris must now decide who actually starts.
“We’ll see for the game time because they are not all at the same stage, but they are available,” he said of his options.
New signing Thomas Meunier had been troubled by back pain but trained this week and will be in the squad, with the potential for minutes at right-back. Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele also return from injuries, giving Sunderland depth and flexibility across the back line.
Nott'm Forest v Leeds: Forest lose captain, Farke treads carefully
Nottingham Forest open the season without their captain. Ryan Yates has been ruled out after missing the final pre-season friendly against Stade Brestois and failing to recover in time.
Defender Nicolo Savona is also sidelined. He missed the end of last season after surgery and has suffered a minor setback.
“We had to take a step back, so he’s working in the gym again and working on his knee to get back on the grass. I think it will take a couple of weeks,” Oliver Glasner explained.
Everyone else is available, giving Forest a near-full squad aside from two significant leaders.
Leeds arrive with their own balancing act. Noah Okafor, who hit six goals in his last 10 games of last season, has been back in full training for two weeks. Daniel Farke, though, is wary of rushing him.
“It’s my responsibility to see if it makes sense and we’ll take some late decisions,” he said.
Willy Gnonto is out with a hamstring injury, with Leeds “hoping to have him back in team training soon”. Gabriel Gudmundsson is also “still out”. Beyond that, Farke has a fit group to choose from as Leeds look to hit the ground running.
Brentford v Spurs: defensive reshuffle for De Zerbi
Bournemouth’s team news is still to come, leaving the Brentford side of this fixture oddly blank for now.
Spurs, though, already know they will have to improvise at the back. New club captain Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro are both ruled out, forcing Roberto De Zerbi into an early defensive reshuffle.
Archie Gray is expected to deputise at right-back, while Marcos Senesi, signed from Bournemouth this summer, could be thrown straight in at centre-back. Pape Matar Sarr is also not fit enough to feature.
There is better news higher up the pitch. James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Mateus Fernandes and Destiny Udogie are all available, giving De Zerbi enough attacking firepower even as he patches up his back line.
Brighton v Aston Villa: Hurzeler juggling injuries
Fabian Hurzeler’s first league line-up as Brighton manager will be shaped heavily by the medical room. Yankuba Minteh is out for at least a couple of weeks, while Carlos Baleba, Kaoru Mitoma and Stefanos Tzimas are all doubts and will be assessed before Sunday’s game.
New signing Promise David could make his debut, most likely from the bench as Brighton manage his introduction and the load on their injury-hit attack.
Aston Villa’s team news is yet to be confirmed, but Brighton’s issues already hint at a tactical puzzle for Hurzeler in his Premier League bow.
Man City v Bournemouth: Rose hit by early setbacks
Manchester City have kept their cards close to their chest on team news, but Bournemouth’s situation under new manager Marco Rose is already complicated.
Last season’s breakout star Junior Kroupi is out until around November after foot surgery, a major blow to Rose’s attacking plans. Tyler Adams is being assessed and remains in contention, yet Ryan Christie’s suspension opens a gap in central midfield that could force an early rethink.
David Brooks is also being monitored, adding another layer of uncertainty. Rose’s first official match in charge comes with a patched-up squad and a trip to face the champions. The timing could hardly be tougher.
Newcastle v Liverpool: Joelinton out, Bamba in
Newcastle start the season without one of their key midfield engines. Joelinton is out “for a couple of weeks” and will miss the opening weekend, manager Matthias Jaissle confirmed.
“I'm really confident that he will be back as soon as possible,” Jaissle added, but for now he must find a solution. Summer signing Aladji Bamba is expected to step into central midfield.
At right-back, Amar Dedic could be thrown straight into Premier League life. “He got some minutes in friendlies there, I am confident that he's ready and we need him,” Jaissle said. Tino Livramento is close to a return but has only taken part in one training session, so he is likely to wait a little longer.
Liverpool’s team news remains under wraps, leaving one of the weekend’s standout fixtures shrouded in just enough mystery.
Fulham v Chelsea: Arbeloa’s first call, Alonso’s new-look attack
Alvaro Arbeloa’s first competitive Fulham line-up will be without a key defender. Joachim Anderson is suspended for the start of the season, while Tom Cairney is out until October following knee surgery earlier this month.
Arbeloa still has decisions to make all over the pitch, but one seems clear: new signing Gonzalo Garcia, brought in from Real Madrid this summer, is expected to start up front and lead the line.
Across west London, Chelsea begin under Xabi Alonso with fresh faces and familiar fitness caveats. Danny Welbeck, signed from Brighton, is managing his workload in training but could still feature from the bench.
“We are expecting him back on Saturday,” Alonso said. “We need to go day by day but that's the plan at the moment.”
Jordan Henderson is out until September with a wrist injury. Alonso also noted that players who went deep into the World Cup “may need a bit more time”, though none of them are injured and all are available for selection.
As the new season kicks off, the storylines are already set: new managers, patched-up squads, and big calls on big names. By tonight, the guessing stops and the real shapes of these teams finally emerge.
